I should start by trying to discredit any negative reviews about this hotel; if you dislike the hotel and it's style, then you're completely missing the point of visiting Rome and it's wonderfully immersive culture. Rome is not a place you visit to stay in your hotels cooped up, there is so much to see and do that any time other than eating breakfast/sleeping/changing clothes/showering in your hotel is a waste of time. Your hotel must be your base, from where you start and end your precious days in this beautiful city.
So, what does the Champagne Palace offer in that sense? Well I can say that it offers everything you could wish for.
Location - about five minutes away from the Termini Station, and about a 12-15 minute walk to the Colosseum and the rest of the centro historico, the hotel is in a prime location and is easy to spot (on the corner of the street, large sign). If you're worried about the distance from the city centre, then there are lots of bus/train/metro stations near by to help you get around, although I wholeheartedly suggest you walk everywhere in Rome, and take in every single beautiful backstreet, alley and building.
The rooms - cosy, nicely presented and immaculately clean rooms with tasteful and classical decor. I really mean it when I say I think the hotel photos of their standard rooms do the rooms a diservice; they are a lot more modern than they may initially seem! The bathrooms are small but again very clean and nicely decorated, and the water pressure for the showers is some of the best I've experienced anywhere in Italy. Room has decent(ish) air con as well as a mini bar, which is a nice place to store your water overnight to keep it cool! The beds are really comfy, which is a great plus too!
The breakfast - is one the 7th floor so you can enjoy a really nice view of the local area. The food, although perhaps limited is pleasant enough. Most mornings I would have a croissant, a coffee and a blood orange juice, which was more than enough to satisfy me and my partner until lunch time. I think some of the complaints regarding the breakfast service is a little bit unfair. You can't expect endless amounts of buffet style eggs, bacon, sausages etc. because a hotel of this size would simply never offer that. There is cereal, toast, pastries, meats and cheeses. To me that is more than enough.
As for the service, I was pleasantly surprised at how pleasant and polite all the staff were, the gentlemen that work on reception in particular are really helpful and easy to talk to. They can book taxis to come straight to the hotel, and are more than happy to help you arrange for your transfer to whatever airport you're flying through if you're not using the Termini. Room service was excellent, fresh towels and sheets were brought to the room every single day, and the rooms were cleaned regularly.
Negative points? I have a few. The view from our room wasn't the best, we were overlooking a quadrant in the centre of the hotel that was nothing more than a few air conditioning units, and it obscured the sunlight from entering the room, but that might be knit-picking given the fact our room was so nice on the inside. The location might be close to the Colosseum, but it could be considered a little far from areas like Piazza Navona or the Pantheon. I still walked it every day, but if you're an older guest who wants to avoid public transport then the location might be a little bit tricky.
But other than that, all I can say is what a great little hotel, would happily visit again!
