The main reason for visiting is I'm a fan of the movie Roman Holiday so this was on my list. A 20 minute walk from our apartment in Trastevere, the building was a little hard to identify on the map, until we saw the crowd lined up. The line moved quickly and the 2 euro cost is a donation/optional, but we happily paid it. They allow you to take as many photos of different family members as you like (within reason- you can't be there all day) and the very accommodating and friendly male attendant offered to take shots of whole families on more than just one phone. The face is visible from outside the gated off area and also the whole time you are lined up so it's not as though you get one look and then you are gone. The attendant came across as wanting to give people the best experience of this famous icon as possible. But the face isn't just the only reason to visit this church. A beautiful old church with the opportunity to go underground to visit Hadrian's tomb. Again a donation, but one coin per family, not each so we happily obliged. Well worth the visit. And PS...I still have my hand.
