“Wonderful Choice”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

We stayed at the Hotel Ponte Sisto in Rome this past October and had a wonderful time. The staff were all very gracious. They were able to understand my very minimal Italian, and were very accommodating. We chose this hotel through a tour company, Avventure Bellissime, and were very pleased. The hotel was beautiful! There is a nicely decorated courtyard that is very relaxing in the center of building. The rooms were spacious for a downtown city area, and the decor of the room and bathroom were nice. A little dated but everything was very clean. Nice size closets to store our luggage, and a nicely appointed bathroom. We had a room facing the back of hotel which overlooked these beautiful trees. They had these amazing parrot type birds in the trees that I could not get enough pictures of. The hotel had the best breakfast buffet we had in Italy complete with great coffee, nutella, croissants, meats and cheeses. While the hotel was great the location was not near any of the sites we wanted to see - which is not a big deal but we did have to travel to see different places and to look for good restaurants. If I am ever back in Rome I would stay here again.

Perhaps the star rating system differs from US standards the same way that shoe size or clothing size differs between the continents. Whatever the case may be, I was quite disappointed in the quality of this hotel. I expect that for 4-star money I will get some degree of space and elegance in my room, not to mention eager and willing attitudes on the part of staff to be of help. Not so the case in the Ponte Sisto. The only thing it really did live up to was its being located within walking distance of the workshop I was in Rome to attend. This was a mixed blessing as the location was quite noisy. I found myself when going to sleep having to choose between having (relative) quiet by keeping the windows shut and having no circulating air in the room, or having both air and noise by keeping the windows open. This hotel does not provide control over the air flow in each individual room. Therefore, since I was told no AC until mid-May (though it was in the 70's every day), I had to rely on the window to provide air. But then, I was subjected to the various aspects of street noise including traffic, people partying, shouting, music, etc. until the wee hours. To the hotel's credit they did offer to change my room, which I did, but the new room was only marginally larger and quieter, and the decor, basically nonexistent as in the first room. There is also minimal space to put your clothes/possessions. In the first room the shower was tiny and in the second there was a tub/shower that was an improvement but still very narrow. Overall I'd say stay here if you don't mind spending a lot to be near tourist attractions, but avoid if space, quiet, decor and circulating air are important to you.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms that face the street. The higher the better.

The location between historical center and Trastevere is excellent for tourists. The rooms and public areas are clean and well-maintained. Breakfast is good. The double room (i'm not sure which category it was) had enough space and the bathroom was also large. Also the courtyard is worth mentioning. The rate was not cheap, but within reason. The hotel is not quite perfect however. Our room was facing street. It was quite noisy and I had to wear earplugs, so remember to ask for a room facing courtyard. A minor complaint is that the wi-fi works mainly in the lobby area (also in a some rooms that face courtyard).

Before I explain the poor quality of the facility let me start by letting you know that the staff is as disagreeable as one should ever have to contend with at a service facility. Notwithstanding having prepaid with a AAA guaranteed rate, the staff refused to honor it. Then, far from the discounted prepaid rate, they charged full boat walk in rate. It got worse from there. Forget the number of stars, the place itself is a sorry dump with a sad, shabby lobby. There are no amenities to speak of. The courtyard is reasonably pretty. It is 2013 and this dive doesn't offer internet connectivity in the rooms? Drop a couple of sheckels at Best Buy and put some routers in the hallway closes if need be. I believe they call the sorry area that they do pump wi-fi into the "lobby", such as it is. Shame this limited wireless did not even work. I must compliment the succession of obnoxious stiffs behind the front desk for manufacturing excuse after excuse for this. "The server is being rebooted" was a particularly common refrain. Then, of course, is the room. I expect small in a Rome hotel room. You'd really think that hotel management would give enough of a damn to make the dingy, dimly lit room look attractive. Methinks there they shopped at a close-out of slow sellers at Ikea. Hey hotel staff, are you listening: putting little bottles of shampoo in the bathroom don't mean crap when you don't send in housekeeping to fold down the sheets and replace the towels in the evening. I really want to complain that this place is not worth $400. plus per night. But the fact is, I have nothing good to say about it at any price.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

Two three-day stays. Very pleasant, excellent service and very clean. All the modern comforts. Extremely well located to explore Rome on foot. Great breakfast. Among the cons, one of the rooms we had was overlooking the street and was very noisy at night, the rooms were smallish and wi-fi was slow and only available in the reception area.

We were booked at this hotel on a tour of Italy. It is a great little hotel on the Tiber River. It is within walking distance of most tourist attractions. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance from the hotel. The rooms are clean, spacious and the beds are comfortable. There is a beautiful courtyard in the center of the hotel where we ate breakfast each morning. The breakfast buffet was very good. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. There is a small grocery nearby to pick up water and incidentals as well as a tasty gelato shop across the walk. I would definitely stay in this hotel again!

I have stayed at hotel Ponte Sisto many times now - both for business and pleasure. This hotel is the definition of a Roman hotel. Great location, great courtyard, nice Roman style rooms, balcony's with nice views - you just enjoy.
