There is a small museum covering the history of the Cappuccin monks which leads on to the crypt. This has been 'decorated' with the bones of monks. To us it was rather strange and judging by the look of surprise / shock / bemusement from most of the other visitors that we saw exiting the church we were not alone in this view. It is however well worth a visit. Tickets were 5 Euros each if you were in a group.

The crypt underneath this church just up from Piazza Barberini contains the skeletons of over 4000 capuchin monks. Some of the bones have been "artfully" arranged into designs. Can be very frightening to young children but a scene no one will forget. A warning rests above the bones of the monks which have been posed to look like the grim reaper holding an hour glass and scythe, "What you are, we once were; what we are, you will become." The message is inescapable...what we do here on this earth matters, and we will be judged for our actions eventually.

This is a small museum dedicated to the history of Capuchin monks, which was really interesting and informative. Following the museum is an ossuary- a few small rooms where the remains of Capuchin monks have been artistically arranged to create patterns and archways. It sounds odd but it was a very peaceful and serene place and well worth a visit.

This tour is macabre but very interesting. Walking through the passages and hearing the history of the site sent a shiver up my spine. Some items were a little confronting and hard to look at.
