“Lovely hotel, great location”
Reviewed June 23, 2011

Everything written about the hotel by other visitors is correct : the staff is fantastic, extremely helpful and polite and always smiling (which is not always the case in hotels in Italy). The atmosphere of the hotel is personal, quiet, and you won't be bumping into lots of tourists as it is a small hotel. Everything is neat and clean, the breakfast was varied with fruits, cold meat, eggs, bacon, etc. We particularly loved the terrasse which is indeed quite small but has enough tables and chairs for everybody (and not just one table with 2 chairs like it was previously reported). The airco system worked very well, and althought our room was on the street side we did not hear any noise at all (Vatican is rather quiet in the evening, no wild parties in St Peters ;-)
It was great in the evening to go sit at the terrasse for a last drink before returning to our room. We also had Sunday morning was also very surprising when we realised we could hear the choir of St Peter when sitting on the terrasse, a real pleasure ! On the down side the standard bedroom we had was indeed very small and so was the bathroom. For a weekend it's ok but I would struggle to stay in such a small room for more then 2 nights.
To summarize, the hotel is perfect for people who like small quiet and private hotels, and don't mind small rooms !

This is a small pension up on a top floor in an apartment building opposite St. Peter's Basilica. Quiet, with no actual livingroom, the rooms have only small showers, and you can hear the street below if you open the windows. The most unfair thing is that they have a tiny balcony with two tables which they show in a way that looks like they have this enormous rooftop terrace. Nice view I suppose, but it isn't even their property. Rather misleading, not a real hotel. Good breakfast. Rather spartan.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for two nights as headed off for the hills of Umbria. The hotel is lovely and in a great location. It is unusual in that it occupies the upper floors of a building housing Vatican offices. The rooms are very well appointed but small. The staff is very helpful and the hotel is very clean. We totally enjoyed staying there.

This hotel has a small, intimate feel with an environment that makes it easy to get to know other guests. It is about a 10 minute walk to the metro and walking distance to just about anywhere in the historic center, not to mention that it is directly accross the street from St. Peter's Plaza. Breakfasts are fresh and abundant. But most memorably was the staff and the way they went out of their way to orient and assist me with schedules, directions, paperwork and general information. They made phone calls on my behalf and confirmed that everything with my travel plans ran on schedule. I even got a packed breakfast as I left before the kitchen was open. The staff at this hotel set a new standard for efficient, professional personal service that I will not soon forget.

This is a very good hotel. Staff is very helpful all the time and even like to talk to you even if you do not speak Italian.

The location is excellent. It is simply aside Saint Peter's Church in the Vatican City. Rome does not have a good subway (it is very dirt and covers only a small fraction of the city), but the hotel is reasonably near subway and train stations. It also has a lot of bus lines that reach all parts of the city nearby. And you can easily go to downtown and historic sites by foot. As Rome is a lovely city to walk around, this matched to our purposes during the visitation.

Rooms a little bit tight. They are really tighter if you book a French bed room. We did know Frech bed was so narrow and we did change to a Junior Suite the second night of our stay. The staff provided us the solution with no problem with a small and reasonable additional charge. Even so, the other room was a little bit tight if you have big cases.

We had a small problem with the water temperature. It oscilated and we had to be a little bit patient until its temperature stabilized. But this was not annoying to such a point of not recommending Paolo VI. It is still a good hotel.

The breakfast is North-American style and is very good. I recommend it.

Stayed here for two nights recently. The hotel is on the upper levels of a shared building which is very quiet. There's enough signage to guide you through, but not really a great presence in the downstairs area.
Staff were very pleasant and all spoke English thankfully (since I didn't know much Italian).
People have commented that the rooms are small, which is true, however it was rather adequate. There was a big enough bed, a small desk and average bathroom facilities. Having been an old monastery, it was just enough for one person. The bathroom was clean, but the rug in the bedroom was a little bit tired.
Breakfast was a self-service buffet included in the price, and had the usual fare of continental, and some eggs and bacon in a chaffing dish.
From the front door, it's only a few steps away from the Vatican, so the location is excellent.
One let down was the hotel restaurant was only open for breakfast during the quiet season (winter) so you'll need to find somewhere else around the area for dinner if you're going off-peak.

This hotel is perfectly located as it is close to St. Peter's Square. I counted my steps from the gate of this hotel to the closest pillar in St. Peter's Square, it took me 20 steps and I have short legs, this would be less for someone with bigger steps. There is a lovely rooftop garden that is open from 4pm until midnight where you can have a drink and take in the view of St. Peter's Basilica and the Pope's chambers.

The ambiance of the hotel is charming, calming and does not feel like a hotel at all. There is no hustle and bustle of luggages & tourists. When you enter the lift and get to reception you feel that you have entered a quiet realm like that of a museum but then you hear beautiful classical music playing through the sound system and are warmly greeted by friendly reception staff.

This hotel is worth staying at if you are interested in being at the doorstep of St. Peter's basilica. If you want a quiet and extremely clean place to stay without ever bumping into more than 3 hotel guests at once then this is the place to stay. The hotel also provides free internet with a laptop to use. The buffet breakfast is located on the top floor in the Bernini room which is tastefully decorated.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Residenza Paolo VI, established on the premises of an Augustinian Monastery, was inaugurated at the beginning of the Holy Year 2000. The genius loci and the charm of tradition, still alive in its ancient walls, make this property your "private" haven in Rome, far away from chaos, in the pulsing heart of the Eternal City. Rome has many hotels, but only one of them is located directly on St. Peter's Square (Vatican): Residenza Paolo VI, the ideal place for those wishing to stay in the heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes, the Necropolis, St Peter's and Saint John Paul II's tombs, the Vatican Gardens and St. Angel's Castle. Walking along the Vatican Wall, it's easy to reach the Vatican Museums and visit the famous Sistine Chapel. Furthermore, some of our rooms offer special view of the Holy Office or of the internal courtyard of the ancient monastery or even of St. Peter's Dome. From our magnificent Terrace it is possible to admire up close St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, exactly where the Holy Father Pope Francis appears to bless the faithful and to recite the Sunday Angelus. ... more   less
