“Lovely 'little' hotel”
Reviewed July 30, 2006

We stayed at the River Palace at the beginning of July. It took us most of the first day to get there as there was a Taxi strike so we had to get a (very hot) bus from the airport which dropped us at Termini Station. From there we could of got the metro but they looked a little scarey so we decided to walk it! (mistake). It was extremely hot and alot further than we thought. However when we finally got there we were pleasently suprised.

The lobby was very luxurious and the staff very helpful! as other people have mentioned the hotel is set out very strangely at not good for the disabled as the lifts are very small.

The rooms were very nice, we stayed in a standard room and yes they are tiny but to be honest we didn't spend too much time in the rooms anyway. They were very well decorated and the bathroom was really lfancy! they were very quite and the beds were comfy. My only complaint about the room was the minibar was very expensive! There was a turn down service on a night,
they left choc's and tomorrows weather forcast on your bed (nice touch)

The breakfast left a bit to be desired but that didn't spoil it.

The hotel bar was very expensive and closed before advertised (I would avoid it to be honest) again no big deal, there are more than enough places to drink.

We were there for the world cup which was a brilliant night, we found some lovely bars and restaurants. Also. it wasn't as expensive as we'd been lead to believe. About what you'd expect to pay in any capital city.

We got a taxi back to the airport arranged by the hotel. It was a nice service but be warned it was very expensive!

Just a couple of things about Rome you need to know

*Be careful on the roads, they are absolutely bonkers. They don't stop at the zebra's unless you walk out in front of them and then they just go around you!

*The queue's for the colloseum and St Peter's are very long expect to be there for a good hour. Also, if you go to st Peter's remember to wear sensible clothing because it's so beautiful and it would be a shame to stand in a queue for an hour only to realise they won't let you in because your shoulders aren't covered and you miss out!

*Don't go in July or August if you don't like the heat because it's very hot! (30 degrees plus)

In a nutshell, we had a fab time in Rome and we would definately go back to the River Palace. If you have any questions please feel free to email me!

This Hotel was nice inside, but the size of the room spoiled it all for us.
When we finally got there (taxi strike) it was decorated nicely and didnt look tatty, and staff seemed friendly, though not over efficient.
It was very oddly laid out hotel and was almost a little surreal at times. The lift to the first floor would fit 4,but then any floor higher, the second lift would only fit two and therefore I'd not advise anyone with claustrophobia stayed here -the rooms included, not just the lift.

Our room was clean and sumtously decorated, however unless you walked over the bed to get the bathroom, or showered and dressed whilst your partner was asleep there was no space whatsoever! The bathroom was nearly as big as the bedroom.

Although on the good side there was a turndown service nightly with Godiva chocs, weather forcast and fresh towells etc, and sweets and chocs in the lobby bar area, the rest was disappointing.

At breakfast there were only approx 8 tables, so if there was a rush you may be waiting a long while or miss out. The drinks were as expected, terribly over-priced and the bar shut beofre the stated time every night, even for us residents..! Access to stairs was only available when maids were cleaning as they must have had the keys, The doors were not able to be opened from your side, so the lift down for a night out could take 20 mins if everybody left at once...

Not my cup of tea. Was disappointing and the fact that the rooms are bigger in Travellodge, at the time of my stay Id've preferred that.

Having read the other recent reviews I agree that this is a good place to stay in Rome.
We have stayed in Rome 3 times and followed Trip reviews for the best hotels within our price range and found these reviews helpful.
The position is excellent and I love the Piazza del Popollo with its buzz and plenty of places to eat nearby.
Staff is very helpful and friendly and recommended us 2 good places to eat during our week end stay (porta di ripetta 10 mins walk away excellent)
Sadly the hotel restaurant is closed until sept.
Yes ,rooms are small (ours , 301,was a "superior" but still small, ) but unless you want to swing cats who cares! There was everything you would need and the air con was much appreciated as it was very hot. Room also soundproof and comfy bed.Very clean too!
We arrived from the Ciampino airport via Terravision coach at 8 euros each and took the metro to Faminio at 1 euro each, fine if you aren't in a hurry and can move quickly with a case in the metro.
We took a taxi back arranged at the hotel and the only drawback was the expense,60 euros! Apparently dearer because it was a Sunday. It was lovely but 60 euros!!
However I do recommend this hotel and was pleased with our stay there

Stayed at the river Palace and enjoyed it so much i have booked for Feb. 2007. The rooms were on the small side but tastefully decorated as were the bathrooms. The service was excellent with towels and linen changed daily. The beds were turned down with chocolates left on the pillow. We ate at the cafe at the top of the street and i can recommend the sea food spagetti and a bottle of chianti. We got the airport bus for 1 euro and then the metro for 1 euro. Ensure that you validate your metro ticket by putting it through the turnstile. Be aware of pick pockets and if you wish to make a purchace then carry your passport with you if paying by card.

My husband and I have just come back from Rome staying at the River Palace. The hotel was excellent, beautiful decoration, spotlessly clean and a more than comfortable bed. On reading other reviews about small rooms, we found our room to be more than adequate (room 101 - facing the street). You could hear street noise, but what do you expect in the middle of Rome!! It all adds to the atmosphere. Location was excellent and we walked everywhere, Rome is so beautiful why spend your time on an underground and miss all the sights. You could easily walk to the Vatican in 20/25 minutes/Spanish Steps 10 minutes. At the Coliseum we picked up an English speaking guide who did a tour and would recommend doing this (email me if you need their name - I can't remember it, but have the brochure at home) as they also did a tour of Ancient Rome and the next day of the Vatican. It was very informative and we got a real insight into these places rather than walking around with a guide book. highly recommended. Food excellent - you can eat as expensive or cheap as you want. In the streets past Piazza Poppolo you can eat reasonably with 2 courses/beer for about 50 euros per couple. If you just want pizza and beer even cheaper. Overall Rome was excellent and would love to go back. We would definitely stay at the River Palace Hotel, excellent location, staff, rooms and breakfast.

We came upon this hotel through an American Airlines program. Another hotel they'd recommended in another town was very large, so we were startled upon seeing the size of the room. Then we realized, yes it was small, but like a jewel box. It's decoration and furnishings were if not new, close to it, nicely designed and importantly to us, the matress comfortable and firm. We found that the closet could accommodate both our suitcases and a travel bag, our hanging clothes and its drawers held the rest, including a safe. By getting the suitcases out of the way, we were able to walk around the bed. The room contained a small corner desk with chair, two night stands and refrig/bar.
The continental breakfast was very good with meat, juice, eggs, fruit, rolls and breads, cheese, coffee, or cappuccino when ordered. The dining room staff was excellent. Because of its size, we had a short wait a couple mornings on couches with newspapers and magazines in the nearby lobby. The staff kept track of who was next. Overall, the hotel staff was excellent and helpful. The room and facilities were kept spotless.
The hotel is away from the noise, one block from the Piazza del Popolo and subway. We took the subway and a train to the wonderful ruins of Rome's old port at Ostia Antica, about as far away as Rome's airport, but the trip was only 1 E each way. Other than a 2 or 3-stop subway trip to the Vatican, we walked to the sights other days. It's about a 15 minute-walk south to the Trevi Fountain.
Hotel and staff quality were high on our visit. But know whether you can be comfortable in a small bedroom and tight shower. The space didn't become an issue as we spent full, walking days out and slept soundly in the room. We'd gladly return to the River Palace.
One recommendation: They should add a small shelf to the shower for soap/ shampoo.

I can't recommend this hotel enough. It was very clean and seemed almost new. As usual in Rome the rooms were very small. We upgraded to a little larger room and our only complaint is that it was on the outside of the building and we heard the street car all night. The A/C was not turned on so it was pretty loud. We were told this is because the government gives specific dates when they can turn on the A/C. Our daughters had an inside courtyard room and it was very quiet with the windows open. The breakfast was excellent. The front desk made restaurant and gallery reservations for us along with getting us a minivan from and to the airport and train schedules to Pompeii. The hotel is about 100 yards from the subway and Piazza del Popollo and a 15 minute walk to the Spanish Steps. We'll stay here again on our next visit.
