After viewing mosaics from afar, Santa Prassede was a special treat inasmuch as the chapel's mosaics are within a few feet of the viewer. The colors are vivid and do not require extensive research or a guidebook to understand. While this destination may not be one of the "Top 10" in the guidebooks, it is well worth the detour to experience these mosiacs.

I am a sucker for old churches, but this one was quite unique. The church contains mosaics dating from the 800's. The church is not extremely well lit; for 1 Euro you can "turn on the lights" for 5 minutes (I think). OK to take pictures. There is a wonderful mosaic in the apse, and a chapel on the right side as you face the altar (you go inside it, which is a little unusual--be sure and turn around to take in the whole thing). I was just fascinated with the beauty, the antiquity and the unique mosaics.

This is one of Rome's highlights when it comes to early Christian art. The mosaics in the apse are excellent but the real gem is the chapel of saint Zeno on the right. As this is quite a small space it is possible to get a closer look of the mosaics than in most of Rome's other churches. Although the church is just down from Santa Maria Maggiore it receives relatively few visitors.

The mosaics, particularly those in the apse, are the artistic glory of Santa Prassede. However, if you want to get the most out of your visit, arm yourself with a good pair of binoculars and buy the extremely informative little guide book which the church sells.
Oh, and carry some loose change to feed the light meter.

Santa Prassede is a 9th-century basilica with glorious Byzantine mosaics in the apse and filling a side chapel. Also here is a piece of the scourging column of Christ, brought from Constantinople in the Middle Ages, relics from the catacombs in the crypt, and a monument by a 17-year-old Bernini.
The small Chapel of St. Zeno, off the right aisle, was built as a mausoleum for Paschal's mother Theodora. It is the only chapel in Rome entirely lined with mosaics. It is an extraordinary sight and, for this author, the highlight of Santa Prassede.
