A bit more off the beaten track although we then discovered a number 3 tram links this with Basilica Santa Croce and Basilica San Giovanni. A much plainer building but a very accessible site. - less obvious control on visitors - not a criticism of other sites but more a reflection of the quietness of the area. Don't miss the tomb and the reliquary

Given its age, historical importance and beauty, San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura would attract many more visitors than it does, if it didn't lie in a part of Rome that is not frequented by many tourists. But don't let this put you off, for the church can easily be reached by public transport (both the 492 and 71 buses pass by it and also Tram 3).
For me, the glory of San Lorenzo is its late 6th century mosaic, which, curiously, can only be seen from the back of the altar. The explanation for this is that the original church faced the other way. In the 13th century its orientation was completely reversed.
Don't miss the Romanesque cloister, an oasis of peace and tranquillity.

Opening hours: 7-12/16-19.

We took a late afternoon walk from our hotel to San Lorenzo church... and it was well worth the long walk :)
This is a beautiful church that seems to be overlooked on the Tourist map.. there was only about 10 people in this beautiful and very peaceful church.
Its got a really spiritual feel to it. We took our time just walking about taking it all in.
Spend some time walking around the joining cemetary.. very peaceful..

Also do make a point of stopping off in a bar/cafe or restaurant in the district of San Lorenzo, it has a completely different feel to it from the rest of Rome.. more local and community based.
We had a couple of drinks sitting outside in the evening sun at very reasonable prices..
