Owner description: Built in celebration over Augustus' victory over the murder of Caesar in 42 BC, this ancient site is dominated by the remains of the Temple of Mars.

It would be hard to understand the years and years of conflict, building and power-seizing without a tour guide. Yet, just to stand and view huge stone buildings and pillars that were built without modern mechanical means is impressive.

Echo past postings about combining this with a Colloseum tour and avoiding extra costs and waiting in line.

You can see this site entirely from the main road (via dei Fori Imperiali). It is somewhat confusing as Augustus's Forum is wedged between those of Nerva and Trajan. There doesn't seem to be any separation until you sort it out with a map. The Forum is dominated by a Temple to Mars.

We went to the Forum as part of our Colloseum ticket. 12 euros for both is pretty good. We got the last guided tour for 5 euros each and are glad we did... It was 1 1/2 hours of excellent information. We learned who built what and where, which we wouldn't know if we had just wandered down. Look at the oldest street in Rome, what is left of large buildings etc.fascinating stuff.

interesting monument with an unusual museum inside (flags). Right in the front, the unknown soldier tomb is watched 24/24 by soldiers in remembrance of a soldier dead during the First World War. Emotional

First, the main photo to show the ruins is NOT accurate, but the photo for the Victor Emmanuel Monument. The ruins are not complete and require tons of imagination to see how they looked more than 1000 years ago. But they will spark your imagination! Be ready to be blown away.
