Not kidding. If you have the choice of going to St. Peter's or going here? Go here.

This church is centrally located but is extremely unassuming from the outside. Ugly, even. Square, boxy, located at a busy intersection... completely unremarkable from the outside. But then you enter and what your eyes take in -- and what causes such mental overwhelm -- is the most beautiful Baroque church you've ever seen. Just look up. It's not uncommon to hear the occasional "gasp" from someone who walks in and looks up at that ceiling. It is dripping with art, and with ceiling frescoes (which actually look 3D) that will make your jaw drop. If you have a high-ISO camera (ISO6400 or higher) you'll want to use it here to capture these ceilings. When friends ask what they should see/do on their trip to Rome, this is in my top-5 attractions. Also: they have a website that will list events throughout the year. If you happen to be in Rome while there's some sort of concert happening there - a choir, a string quintet - GO. Not just because the sound is amazing in that giant church, but because at night, for special events, they turn on special ceiling lights that illuminate every inch of the ceiling's artwork. I remember the first time I saw it at night: I was out walking around with a friend who lives in Rome, and he said "it looks like something's going on at the Gesu, let's check it out" -- so we went in and there was a small string group playing and a small choir singing (no admission charge) so we sat down to listen... and he nudged me and said, " They have the special lights on for this" - and when you looked up at those ceilings, it was mindblowing. And to look up and see that art while your ears are filling up with live music? It's one of those great travel experiences that absolutely transports you. I wouldn't sacrifice that memory for a million bucks.

The anti-Reformation movement led by Jesuits used some "templates" including the "recommended" typy of church construction. And Il Gesu is this "master copy". Rich inside, lots of decorations, suprisingly simple and light facade. Woth seeing if nearby.

I was not expecting this church to be so stunning. The ceiling is a masterpiece, while the side chapels are so rich in decoration that they look like small altars. I generally don't appreciate baroque, but this church left me absolutely breathless.

I went to all the top rated in the Michelin guide and this was one. I loved the ceiling and the chapel Sant'Ignazzio. Well worth a special visit.
