“Lapis Lazuri”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

A huge piece of Lapis Lazuri is seating among the Baroque structure to the side of the church near the altar. The ceiling is amazing. A sort of sistine chapel affair and appears to be 3 dimensional.

“The ceiling art rivals the Sistine Chapel...!!!”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

I suppose it is to each their own when it comes to tastes in Churches... They can all start to look the same to the layperson after seeing 3 to 4 a day when traveling about the EU... From the outisde, you may think that, "Ahhhh, nothing special... Looks like most other churches..." Recognize that this was the first that all others followed in this style... Walk in the doors, and if this place doesn't impress you, I'm not sure what to say... Look up at the ceiling - I actually thought it was se up like a pop up book with figures painted on different surfaces... When I realized there were shadows from the clouds on both sides of the nave, I just about fell down...!! The illusion of depth created by Bocaccio blew my mind... The chapels to Loyola and Xavier are interesting and over the top - they would have rolled in their graves!!! The giant lapiz globe above Loyola's would cost a pretty penny back in those days... And the glob of solid gold the angels recline on above Xavies left arm must be worth millions...! This is where the jesuits marched from to conquer and manipulate the minds and souls of millions... Ponder that, and the impact on history, whether you think its good or bad... It's incredible.

Reviewed September 19, 2012

This was by far my most favorite church in Rome. It was very beautiful and the ceiling was very unique.

“Too ornate for our taste”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

This is a visual extravaganza. Baroque, overblown, and every last part is decorated to the hilt. I find such churches too ornate to spend time in. Prefer older and more subtle decoration.
