Only saw it from the outside, I suppose it was closed then. Nothing much to see, the Piazza is no biggie either, small and boring.

One of our favorite churches to visit it is in piazza in Trastevere. it is an incredible Byzantine church with magnificent 1000 year old mosaics behind and above the altar. The age and beauty is mind boggling.

Located in a rather isolated piazza in Trastevere sits the incredible Byzantine church with magnificent 1000 year old mosaics behind and above the altar. The age and beauty is mind boggling. We have been to Rome at least 15 times and this was our first trip to Santa Maria in Trastevere. Do not miss it!

We traveled around Rome seeking out works by Bernini and Caravaggio. This was one stop on our tour. There is a large Caravaggio of the death of the virgin Mary. When you leave the church look across the square to the cafe on the far left. Go there for lunch.

Coin operated lights illuminate the beautiful art work. The dome over the main altar was especially impresskive. Be sure to see the 6th century Madonna at the left front.
