and it's a nice baroque church, worth a stop. Not far from Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, Jesuit church, worth as well.

Yet another brilliant example of proper recycling. The dome is amazing and I won't tell you it's secret. Check the ceiling frescoes from different positions in the church and see the columns change direction. Finally find the story about the elephant in the square, and why version number 2 faces a different way to version number 1

We had visited this church while biking through Rome. I went back for Sunday Mass. It is beautiful to sit and admire the church during the service, but I am surprised they can still keep it open. There were only about 20 of in attendance and there were no alter servers, ushers or musicians. There was one person that did the readings and and assisted the priest and she also collected the offertory. It made me sad that some of these old churches are barely surviving and I now donate much more freely just to look inside at these beautiful works of art. Don't forget to check out the outside along the left side of the wall as you face the church...there are plaques marking the flood levels of the Tiber River in past years which is cool to see how high it actually got.

My guidebook was unfair describing this church as ‘a little bit gaudy’. Its certainly different to the other churches I saw in Rome and for me was more Gothic than Baroque inside. It also has some real interest with a MichaelAngelo sculpture of Christ, the grave of Fra Angelico, a Bernini designed tomb and the tomb of the Italian patron saint, whose name escapes me right now.

This is one of those churches that looks calm from the outside but is a powerhouse inside.
Houses one of the lesser known Michelangelo statues (Christ bearing the cross) to the left of the alter. The high alter has the sarcophagus of Saint Catherine. We happened into the church on April 29th, which is the feast day of St Catherine. What a lucky situation for us!
Absolutely gorgeous!
One block from the Pantheon. The piazza houses an Egyptian obelisk on elephant-back.
