Beautiful basilica with little hint as to what was behind the doors from outside. Just around the back of the Pathenon off a quiet Piazza. Stunning decoration and interesting place of interest.

Upon entering, you will be struck by the beautiful blue ceiling painted with stars. At the altar, you can get right up to Michelangelo's The Risen Christ. No ropes to hold you back. Just to the left of Christ is the 1455 tomb of Fra Angelico, the great Italian Renaissance painter. Catherine of Sienna is buried here, and in the first chapel on the right is a great painting of the Sacred Heart of Christ with Catherine. Several Popes are buried here as well. Great place to wander around for a few moments and get away from the crowds at the Pantheon.

This church is not as well promoted as many but it has some fascinating features. To begin with the statue in front is a hoot, an elephant with an obelisk on top. The statue is a work by Bernini, and the obelisk from ancient Egypt. The interior of this Gothic style church is lovely, and includes works by many of the greats including Michelangelo, and no lines!

The tour books we read didn't really say much about this church, but it is an Italian Renaissance jewel. The quality and quantity of its painting and sculpture were breath-taking and there is no admission charge.
