You could spend a couple of hours here no problem. Just a few minutes walk from Piramide metro station. It's a little osasis of peace and quiet. Interesting graves and many famous people including Shelley and Keats. Free entry.

The trees, the plants, the beautiful, personalized monuments, the scent of jasmine, the agapanthus flowers.......and, of course, the cats. This is one of my favorite places to visit in Rome. Sit on a bench and just take it all in - the light is beautiful when it first opens at 9 AM. Make sure to check the hours in a guidebook - they close at noon on Sunday.

They suggest a 3 euro donation, and I would really strongly suggest that you leave one - the maintenance has got to be very expensive - it's really a huge, spectacular garden. And, of course, make sure to leave money for the cats!

A beautiful place for a walk. Right next to the city wall. From a lawn within the cemetery there is a great (maybe the best) view of the Cestius pyramid.

A lovely peaceful place to wander and ponder. Beautifully maintained and cared for by - I think - a band of dedicated volunteers. A donation of €3 is suggested but not obligatory. We spent the better part of an hour there reading the epitaphs of the famous and not-so-famous.

Most people come to this place to see the tombs of Keats, Shelley or Cramsci, depending on the inclinations, but we recommend that you spend your time wandering around and discovering the moving memorials in this patchwork of faiths and worldviews. Sometimes the place is called quite narrowly the Protestant or English Cemetery, but actually people from all denominations (and without one, I presume) can find their resting place here – of course they had to be fairly wealthy, since the cemetery is maintained by donations and the families of the deceased.

You will find beauty, wit and sadness here. I cried on several occasions, especially at the foot of the memorial of a schoolboy who had paused in the midst of reading.

And remember that this is also a sanctuary for homeless cats, as are various historical sites in Rome. Don't forget to give a separate donation for their care.

It is very easy to get here. Just take the metro to the station of Pyramide, look for the Pyramid and walk around the cemetery walls until you reach the gate. The Pyramid itself is an interesting sight, and don't forget to look at the Testaccio hill, the ancient waste dump that is comprised of millions and millions of pottery fragments. Somehow it is fitting that these sites stand side by side.
