“Form Over Function”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

This hotel has a wonderful location, situated on a quaint and quiet alley near the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The hotel itself felt like it was trying too hard to be modern and cool and missed the mark. The rooms themselves definitely fell into the category of form over function, especially in the bathroom. The bathroom door is glass, which is nice to look out, but lets in a lot of light into the bedroom when it isn't wanted. The shower head is hand held and cumbersome making the shower less enjoyable than it could or should be.I did appreciate the art in the room which was inspired by Magritte. In general, not a bad hotel, but I would look elsewhere first.

We liked this hotel. It got a very modern look and feel. Every floor got a different color. Very original.
The staff is very friendly and the breakfast buffet is good.
What we liked is that it's very well located in a quiet side street, close to the spanish steps with a metro stations very close by.
So if you like to do some sightseeing in Rome this is the perfect start.
Small minor detail is that the room we had was a bit small but I guess that's everywhere in the center of Rome. In Rome you would spend nearly all day outside so it's not a big problem.

Cleanliness - Average. You don't particularly feel like it's super clean but you don't really see any dirt or stains.

Location - Excellent. I think this is probably what you're really paying for. It feels like a very safe area to walk around in at night. It has a lot of restaurants, the Spanish steps are like a hundred steps away, a huge shopping area less than 1000 feet away and there's a train station nearby for easy access to places you'd like to go to.

Rooms - Had the deluxe room for 3 people. It wasn't too uncomfortable but don't expect to be moving a lot with the extra bed and 3 luggages inside the room. Room was oddly shaped, which made it tighter than it could have been (there was a huge post in the center which made the area unusable). Bathroom was pretty small and a bit broken. Toilet was squeaky every time someone sat on it and the sink leaked at the bottom on the first night. The rooms were designed to be modern but they feel and look a bit tired already.

Service - Our first experience with regards to service in this hotel was very bad. We were faced with their surliest receptionist (it was a lady - didn't get her name although there was only 1 lady during our 4 day stay). We didn't feel welcome at all, she never greeted us when we passed by the reception area (while all the others do), and upon check-in, she rudely answered questions and ordered us to give our passports in order of room assignments (surely there was a nicer way of saying things). While the rest of the staff were polite - never warm or sincere though, there was 1 guy (I think his name was Francois) who went out of his way to make our stay much better and id like to commend him on that.

Other points are (1) breakfast was pretty good, something to tide you over until the afternoon. There was a selection of cold meats, smoked salmon, cereals, breads, spreads, juices, and you can request for scrambled eggs from the waiters. (2) Internet access is not free. The charge you a 1 time fee for access for 2 devices for your whole stay - although you have to request for a password every time. (3) There's a water fountain near the hotel (4) Beware of cab drivers. One driver charged us 11euro, while the other charged us 20 euro from the train station near Termini (we were a big party so we needed 2 cabs). (5) air conditioning was a bit weird, you had to call the receptionist if you wanted to turn up or turn down the temperature.

We had a Standard Double room at Hotel Art for five nights in mid June and had a pretty nice stay. On the plus side, the hotel is located on a quaint, quiet side street (Via Margutta) just a 5-minute walk from the Spanish Steps. It was so nice at the end of our busy day of sightseeing and being around hordes of tourists to take refuge in this peaceful oasis, but we were still only steps away from restaurants, shops, and lots of activity if we wanted it. In fact, one of our best meals in Rome was at a small restaurant just a few doors down from the hotel. The hotel's furnishings and decor definitely conveyed that it was a hip and happening "designer" hotel, and our room was stylish, clean, and comfortable. The customer service was, well, serviceable. The hotel staff we interacted with were pleasant enough, but no one really went out of their way to be overly personable. Everyone was business-like and a bit aloof. The breakfast selection was above average. Of the five hotels we stayed at during our recent Italy trip, Hotel Art probably ranks somewhere in the middle for its breakfasts....a decent selection of pastries, meats, cheeses, and (most importantly, as far as I'm concerned) fruits and cereals.

On the negative side, our room was extremely small. Because of the weird "bump-out" in the room (a rounded section of the wall between the bathroom and sleeping area in order to accommodate the bathtub), there was only a 9-inch clearance between the end of the bed and the wall, resulting in my frequently bumping my shin on the bed frame. Also, there wasn't much of a view; our window looked out at the covered walkway leading to the hotel's front doors, which was fine because we appreciated the lack of street noise. But as if to compensate for the lack of noise emanating from the outside, the interior noise was a little disturbing at times. The walls are really thin and the halls are really narrow, which resulted in our frequently feeling like we were sharing a room with the family across the hall (granted, maybe the family was just especially loud and annoying). As I mentioned, the room was clean and comfortable, but it was a little rough around the edges, e.g. chipped tile and bathtub enamel, taking away slightly from the designerly feel. And the lights and air conditioning were a little challenging to operate, resulting in some frustrating moments.

One caveat I'd give people considering staying here is that it's not in a particularly convenient location in relation to some of Rome's biggest attractions, like the Colosseum and the Forum. On a map, the hotel looks totally walkable to these sights. And it is, but it's not a pleasant walk. A large part of the only practical route between the hotel and these sights (Via del Corso) involves walking on the world's narrowest sidewalks, forcing you to either trudge slowly behind the masses of people or risk life and limb by walking in the street and dodging traffic. We made this journey nearly every day, and it quickly became burdensome.

Room Tip: Although even the Standard Double rooms are pretty darn expensive, if I had to do it over I'd pr...

Good location, near restaurants, near Spanish Steps...
Small room, we didnt have enough space (we were in a suite)
The shower is dangerous, if you have any kind of problems with back pain....
impossible to get into it
When we had a question and call to Front Desk there was anyone to answer
our call.....not safe, nobody at front at night
Poor but quite good the breakfast, a little dark inside....
Not elegible for a next time visit!!!

We stayed here for 4 nights and paid appx 275 euros per night.
- We stayed in room 110 which is tiny. You have to be very careful not to hurt your foot while opening the closet door as there is no space between the bed and the closet door once opened. The shower is also very small. Do not think the room is 22 sq meters plus as advertised.
- The Fitness Center is only a treadmill - shameful advertising. The tv in room was still showing more cardio machines and weights.
- Opening the door required special technique which no one bothered to explain to us. Swipe, wait for the sound, pull and push.
- The breakfast is excellent and the location is very convenient.

We stayed at the Hotel Art for five nights in June 2013. The hotel is on Via Margutta, a charming (and famous) street right in the posh shopping area of the Spanish Steps. The staff was welcoming, our room was clean, modern, and just what we needed as a home base for a vacation in Rome. The bathroom also has a huge bathtub. The breakfast was delicious and had a large array of fresh food (cheeses, pastries, breads) to choose from. Overall we had a fantastic experience and would definitely stay here again.
