San Lorenzo is a traditional working district of Rome, now home to many students, and if you're a tourist you're unlikely to find yourself here unless you are staying close to Termini station, from which it is a not very pleasant walk. We were delighted to find such good value so close to the centre of a capital city - three course plus wine, water and coffee for two came to under 50 euros. Yes, the decor is a bit down at heel, but it is more than made up for by the opportunity to eat with an almost exclusively local clientele (an American couple were the only other visitors the night we were there) and all the atmosphere that implies. Don't expect an English language menu but all the traditional specialities are reliable and there is a particularly good range of vegetable contorni. The bar next door, where we enjoyed a beer beforehand, is astonishingly cheap.
