This adorable little hotel is nestled in Trastavere, a stone's throw from the Colosseum and other major sights. It is secluded, private, and offers the perfect place to take a siesta in between sightseeing excursions. Rome is a very fast-paced, crowded city and the Hotel Santa Maria offers the perfect little paradise to help you recouperate from the excitement of the city outside. It has adorable little cafe tables in the pebbled courtyard, a generous breakfast, and full bar. The hotel staff are extremely kind and courteous.

E.g. when I stumbled back to the hotel on my last night in Rome, I asked the man working the reception if it was too late to get a caffe latte. He said no, not at all, and jumped up and walked to the bar to make me one. He then asked if I wanted to bring it to my room. I said yes, and he grabbed a tray and carried it to my room for me. I can't say enough good things about this place!

Keep in mind --- the rooms are small by American standards; they're definitely not suites. They are clean and fully equipped and stocked though. The atmosphere of the hotel, the location, and the staff all make it 5 star quality in my opinion.

We just returned from a week in Italy and had a great room at the Hotel Santa Maria in Rome. The staff and the accomadations were excellent. I was informed that the hotel was a former convent and the location is in the a section of Rome with narrow streets and alleys with great resturants (The Cistern). I had e-mailed prior to my arrival and had a car pick us at the Airport (50e)and had the staff palce flowers and a bottle of wine in my room for my anniversary. The breakfast was one of the best served during our stay in Italy. I would stay at the Santa Maria again...

There is simply nothing about this hotel experience that was negative....the staff...the accomodations....the ownership....the location....the ambiance...it clearly made our trip to Rome even more memorable than the beauty, history and awe of "the eternal city". Coincidently, I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Paulo, and was even further impressed by his personal commitment to the "postive" guest experience. Where else in Rome can you live within the walls of a historic cloistered community dating back centuries with modern accomodations, where each evening the staff presents a table filled with hors d'ourves of exceptional tasteworthyness to be enjoyed within the courtyard of the cloister surrounded by citrus trees, an unbelieveably inclusive breakfast buffet, all footsteps away from restaurants and trattorias of exceptional food and value, at a very competitive price. Close to everything, yet far from Rome's hussle-bussle....think of an "oasis" in hectic Rome....a thirty minute walk to the Vatican...or to the ruins. Perfecto!!!!!

Paulo, you're the best...vision, commitment and a unique experience. Thanks to all!

A very private and lovely setting almost totally tucked away in this ancient portion of Rome. Staff performed a very quality service and were most attentive to our needs.

Hotel Santa Maria proved to be the perfect evening respite from frenetic pace of Rome. A peaceful glass of wine in the courtyard as the stars brighten, while the churchbells nearby chime sweetly...truly wonderful.

We stayed at the Santa Maria for 5 nights in Sept 2005 and enjoyed every moment. The staff were helpful and friendly while the breakfast was superb. There were also a nos of factors that reduced the cost ie the 10% discount for cash and the free guided walking tour(which was very enjoyable). We will be back.
