The Hotel Santa Maria is absolutely charming and perfectly located. The rooms are immaculate, great bathrooms, warm and friendly staff and fantastic breakfasts! You will want for nothing. We will never stay anywhere else in Rome except the Hotel Santa Maria!

Santa Maria is a quiet, almost serene hotel nestling within the jostling crowds, super restaurants and narrow cobbled streets of the Trastevere. The newly built and well finished rooms are built cloister- style around two tree sheltered courtyards reflecting the site's religous heritage. Only church bells puncture the hotel's night time tranquility!

The staff were professional, friendly and helpful without being intrusive - just the right balance you'd expect from a well run hotel.

The perfect base for your Roman holiday

My only worry about writing this review is that we might never be able to get a room there again because it is so popular.
The taxi driver didn't have a clue where it was and abandoned us in the square. After wandering aimlessly in several wrong directions, a friendly stall holder pointed us in the right direction.
Hotel Santa Maria is well worth looking for. It is situated down a small pedestrianised lane and is a real haven of peace and tranquility, every bit as good as its description on the internet. The rooms all have access to a terrace. Ours was round a corner on its own which meant we had our own private table and chairs. The rooms are comfortable and spotlessly clean, the service is very efficient and breakfasts are generous. The church bells ring out every quarter of an hour, adding to the charm of the place.
Trastevere is a great area to be in - within walking distance of all the main tourist attractions - but much quieter. It is a warren of narrow streets and alleys, packed full of very reasonably priced restaurants frequented by locals as well as tourists. There's even street entertainment in the piazza on a Saturday evening.
We threw a coin in the Trevi fountain, so hopefully we'll be back to Rome. I only hope we can book a room in the Hotel Santa Maria again.

Hotel Santa Maria lived up to the ratings recieved through tripadvisor.com, a very useful source for hotels, I might add. The hotel provided a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the main city across the Tiber River. They had the best breakfast of all of the other hotels we stayed at in Venice and Florence. The hotel staff were professional and attentive. We did not experience any difficulty with any of the staff. As someone else mentioned, the real highlight is the courtyard under the orange trees.

Trastevere is an ecclectic mix of people. The real disappoint throughout the major cities in Italy is the graffitti on everything! So when you first arrive in Trastevere, you don't really know what to think of the area. It was a very safe area, however. The food was delicious--better and more cost effective than across the River. Our favorite restaurant was La Scala. Surprising because it also offered pub fare, but it was the best we had in our 14 days in Venice, Florence and Rome.

I highly recommend Hotel Santa Maria and the Trastevere area. We enjoyed walking everywhere and didn't find any of the sites too far away. The only cab ride we took was from the Train Station and I swore I would never ride in a cab in Rome again after that hair raising experience.

My friend and I visited Rome from 8-11 October 2004 and we stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria as it had been so highly recommended on tripadvisor. It exceeded our expectations. The room was lovely, the bathroom a good size and everything was so clean. The rooms are set around two courtyards and all on ground level so there is very little noise which makes such a change from most inner city hotels. The breakfasts were held outside and the choice was much better than we have had offered before in Italy and the service friendly. The hotel arranged a car to collect and return us to the airport which was prompt and quick and reasonably priced. It took probably about 10 minutes to walk to the Piazza Navona and about 15 to the Forum. Rome is a very busy, noisy, traffic-filled city and to come back to Trastevere in the evenings and find the old city charm with narrow streets and a large square with lovely restaurants and shops was like coming back to an oasis of calm. The hotel looks so beautiful and the area is so interesting that we felt we really saw two sides of this great city. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Stayed 3 nights at this lovely hidden hotel in Trastevere in Rome. Staff is delightful, helpful. Rooms are small, but comfortable. The outdoor spaces are a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of the city. Breakfast is wonderful and a pleasure to have out in the garden. Location in Trastevere is excellent - walking distance to many restaurants, St. Peter's, etc.

I highly recommend this lovely spot.

The place is so magnificent. The staff were very courteous and went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. Hotel Santa Maria is walking distance to to Ponte Sisto, Campo Fiori, Piazza Navorna, The Vatican and other places in Rome. They were kind enough to find a room for me when the place was completely booked. On my last night there I had the flu and I had asked the front desk if there is a possibility that I can have hot soup brought to my room. They made arrangements for me to have soup and hot tea. I would highly recommend Hotel Santa Maria. I think it is the best kept secret and I guess by now it will not be.
