The Hotel Santa Maria is a marvelous hotel, a former convent, hidden away in the back streets of the old city Roman neighborhood of Trastevere. Yet it is only around the corner from the well known Piazza Santa Maria and plenty convenient to public transportation, as well as a short ride to many of Rome's innumerable sights. Quiet, immaculate and charming, it is an ideal place to stay without spending a fortune.

The hotel offers a fabulous buffet breakfast with lots of choice and excellent Italian coffee, as well as wonderful cappuccino (the American coffee on offer was far too weak for us, by the way.) In the afternoon, starting about 5:30, they provide, for free, some great snacks in the bar/breakfast area (of course you can buy a drink if you wish.) My wife and I found this a really nice way to cap off the day before going out to dinner.

Finally, all the personnel were both very friendly and helpful. We highly recommend the Hotel Santa Maria.

Room Tip: It seemed that all the rooms are quiet, so it probably doesn't matter which one you have.

This is a super romantic hotel tucked away from the hustle and bustle, but right in the centre. Walking distance to all the ancient sites. Very pedestrian area full of cobblestone streets piazzas fountains and great restaurants. Our stay was in the middle of summer but rooms were cool and comfortable. A bit small but very clean and cozy. Outside patio areas lovely to enjoy a glass of wine. Definitely a coupley vibe but did see some kids. My favourite place to stay in Rome!

My husband and I recently travelled to Italy for our honeymoon, and we started off our trip by staying at Hotel Santa Maria in Rome for 3 nights. I'll keep this short and sweet: The location was perfect, the rooms great, breakfasts and afternoon snack were fantastic, and the hospitality superb. We could have spent hours exploring Trastavere, and it was wonderful to have so many restaurant and gelato options so close to the hotel. It was the perfect location to have as a base to explore the city, with every major attraction within a 20 minute walk through the winding streets of Rome. We always made time to come back to the hotel to rest before heading out for dinner - enjoying the rooftop solarium or reading/playing games in the garden. I'd recommend this place to anyone travelling to the city. I'd also recommend that you use the pick up service provided by the hotel (not too expensive, and the driver knows exactly where he is going!).

Room Tip: We stayed in room # 12 (hotel gave us a little honeymoon upgrade!) - it would be perfect for a famil...

My husband and I just returned from a week Rome (October 20-27) and had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Santa Maria. We love the activity of the Trastevere neighborhood and this hotel provides a wonderful quiet sanctuary just steps from the action. A lovely, clean room with a very comfortable bed and the biggest and most luxurious shower we've encountered in Italy. Also, just outside our 2nd story room was a huge terrace with umbrellas and lots of comfy seating. Breakfast under the orange trees each morning was a great way to start the day and staff was very helpful and cordial making restaurant reservations and even running up an "emergency" shower cap for the rainshower showerhead. A great place to recharge for all those busy days in an incredible city.

Room Tip: We found the 2nd story "Observatory" (I think this was the designation) rooms to be nicely...

Fantastic hotel right in the hearth of Trastevere quarter. Here you can find lots of bars, restaurants, trattoria, wine bars etc.
The hotel is in walking distance from major attractions....20min max walking.
Great breakfast and garden. I am very fussy and I can tell you that this hotel is really good.
If I have to be extremely picky I'd say a bit of noise in the morning from the staff doing the rooms....but you get this everywhere.
Thanks to Antonio at the reception, the pretty spanish girl from Seville and the gent who made us the coffees at 4am when we left.
Marco

Room Tip: All the rooms face a really nice garden, the one we had (no.6) was v.good. I don't think there...

The location is brilliant, tucked away,50 yards, from a very busy & beautiful piazza making it an ideal base for exploring Rome by foot - surely the best way to see the city. And yet it is an oasis of peace & calm, breakfasting in the courtyard under the lemon trees just one of the highlights. All the staff were incredibly helpful & did their best to make our special trip (our 30th Anniversary) perfect.
