“basic hotel stuck in the 70's”
Reviewed March 31, 2012

If you are coming to Rome and think this is the shangi la of asian fame...think again! it is not!! it is a basic hotel near a motorway, with a decent pizzeria/restaurant next door...but overall, the hotel is stuck in a 70's time warp. Service at the front desk is slow and inefficient...there seem to be employees everywhere but none helping guests... they are either on the phone, staring at paper, writing in ledgers or having conversations about lord knows what which demands concentration and exuberance - usually while guests are standing in the queue to check out/check in/ask a question/order a taxi...you name it... the rooms are basic. NO wifi, basic towels, fierce lighting, dorm style beds, basic toiletries and tiled floors (so, beware if you are on floor 1 and have someone above you!) if you face the 'park' you will hear traffic from 7 am until midnight.. the breakfast room looks like a wedding hall banquet with a decent breakfast (cold/hot buffet) but all too stiff and formal...this is not a good tourist hotel, it is for businessmen like me on a budget and an overnight stay. It is not very comfortable, nor is it convenient to much apart from EUR location. The staff have seen better days, perhaps when the hotel opened in the 70's...

Room Tip: NOT facing the park/road!! On the second (top) floor...

This hotel has an aged and tired decor, but the location for those needing the GRA or the Colombo is fantastic. The location is also within walking distance of the EUROMA 2 (the largest mall in Lazio). Our room was a typical European room (FIRM mattress, flat pillows, and sparse surroundings). All of this would be fine except that the walls are PAPER THIN. I could actually hear the guy in the next room switching on and off the lights on the bedside table! Apparently, this guy also had malaria or something since he COUGHED all night . . . and we could hear him! So, for that I give this hotel an AVERAGE rating. I would rate it higher than the Sheraton Roma (we have stayed here many times) . . . at least the staff at the Shangri la are capable of checking travelers into their rooms in less than an hour. Finally, our keys kept losing their ability to open the door . . . I did find it funny that the guy at the front desk wanted to see my passport (which was in the room) before resetting my key! The staff in the breakfast room were VERY accommodating! Our room was not ready when we arrived, but the cappuccino and cornetto with a selection of fresh fruit took away some of the aggravation of waiting. By the way, the water pressure at this hotel is AWESOME! Take a nice hot shower with plenty of water pressure was a huge plus!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the end of the hall away from the Colombo.

We checked in with a pet, this was no problem for them and they did not charge us more for this. We also had a no smoking room which really was a non smoking room - sometimes we have encountered rooms sold as non-smoking, but reeking of smoke nevertheless.
We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. The restaurant offered sumptuous meals and was able to accommodate special dietary needs. The New Year's party was excellent too - good food, good music and great service. The room had all the important features and we loved the shower, which was surprisingly roomy compared to other hotel showers we have previously encountered in Italy.

This is a stone's throw from lake EUR and also EUROMA2, a major shopping mall with great store and restaurant options.

This hotel is old and noisy, poor location. The room I got smelled bad (despite I asked a smoke free they gave a room that smelled like tobacco). When you open the windows there's a lot of noise.

Stayed here on a one night business trip. Quite stylish athough in a rather dated way. The tired decor was compensated for by some high quality specification - floor tiles, bathroom suite, wooden ceilings etc. The room was a little disappointing, cramped as is typical of Rome, with a poor desk. The restaurant is very stylish, with a great terrace and excellent food. The location of the hotel is not so pretty, dominated by a busy road and the trip to the centre is a fair walk. Value for money wise, at £140/night, a little expensive and while fine for a business trip not quite passig my would pay with my own money test.

being a frequent business traveller, this hotel is welcomed, in its greenery and food so easily available in a resort style ambience right next door. there is an affordable deli for lunch/bfast, gelati, a great seafood restaurant, good breakfast with good service. having stayed at another hotel in rome right in the tourist center, the service and breakfast here is definately better. The room is fantastic, big and there is a sofa with coffee table (so maybe it's a suite), the bathroom is large with a strong rain shower. there is some noise is the morning, namely the road facing the hotel with sirens going off at least 3-4 times in the only morning that we stayed there. Overall, this hotel has enough charm to overcome this minus. considering that we have a balcony with a garden view (a fruiting orange tree), overlooking the restaurants' cute little modern chimneys with the pine trees so common on the roads to rome. It's much better than facing a brick wall/apartment in the centre of rome.

The service was excellent. The staff was very polite, trying to satisfy every need of the clients. We are sure that such staff has not to be afraid of unemployment and crisis. The breakfast was rich. Most interestingly the hotel was very clear and peaceful. Unfortunately we could stay there for two nights only. We shall definitely prefere to stay there, next time that we shall visit ROME, despite the unfavorable location. (The EUR area is outside the Historical center).
