“Good Hotel, Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2014

We were very pleased with this hotel. The room was small but otherwise very nice and comfortable (and, as others have noted, quiet). One minor downside was the lack of a mini bar. All of our other hotel rooms in Europe had one and they were useful to keep a few things cold. Breakfast was very nice as well. Some have commented on the coffee being horrible, but we found it okay - not as good as we had at some other hotels on our trip, but fine to start the day. The terrace was also another plus, though we were only able to use it once since it was raining 2 of the 3 days we were there. The staff was very helpful, offering valuable information about how to get to places. There was a bit of confusion at the end of our stay when we were told the evening before we checked out that we could divide our bill between the cash we had left (we were returning to the US the next day) and our credit card and then told we could not do that the morning we left. But that left us with the pleasant problem of which bottles of wine to buy at the duty free store at the airport to take home with us to run through our euros.

But the location of this hotel is by far and away the biggest selling point. It's a great value for being as close as it is (5 minute walk, I'd say) to Campo dei Fiori. Even closer is a great restaurant right across the street from where you enter (had the swordfish tuscany style - delicious!). Just a few more steps away is Vineria Salumeria Roscoli. We didn't eat there since you seriously need reservations in advance, but bought two bottles of wine there and was not disappointed. They definitely know their wines making it a dependable place to buy one for the room. More accessible is their deli style extension, the Forno Roscioli where we had the best quick lunch of our vacation. We were very pleased being right in the middle of such a great neighborhood in Rome.

We had three nights at the Smeraldo Hotel in Rome and it was great. The first night our room was really small for the two of us but they moved us into a larger room- we were very comfortable, the breakfast was great and the location was fantastic.

We were a party of 4. So we had one room with twin beds and one room with a double bed. The rooms are very small but clean. Big luggage would not fit well. Rooms are clean though the bed linens are a bit worn. The beds are very hard and pillows pretty flat, but I just added a blanket or two under the bottom sheet to give some cushion. The bathrooms though small are ample. Complimentary shampoo and soap is provided, hair dryer included although not much power. Be very careful if you bring any plug-in items, ie curling irons, etc as the power source is 220. You will burn out your unit in nothing flat ( I burned out a portable steamer). The breakfast was wonderful. There is also a patio on the roof that you should utilize. We got some take out pizza and pastries from the bakery next door and went to the roof patio. With a bottle of wine it was a great and relaxing time. Only draw back was I asked for an iron, and was told I would have to go to the roof top patio to use it. Apparently the helps' lockers are up there and that is the only iron. Not very convenient. WiFi is provided but I found it could be spotty.

Room Tip: Our twin bed room was on the 2nd floor with a window overlooking the front of the Hotel which was a...

The hotel is located really central with walking distance to most historical sights. Really friendly and helpful staff made the visit in Rome better. Best breakfast in our stay in Italy (5 other hotels). Small but nice rooms.

I would stay here next time I'm in Rome.

The Hotel Smeraldo is a great find near Piazza Campo Dè Fiori and Piazza Navona. Its is 3 blocks from Ponte Visto and Trastevere. The room was clean, the breakfast was significant, and it made Rome walkable to all of the major sites.

A friend and I spent two nights at Hotel Smeraldo. The twin room was a small but comfortable and air conditioning appreciated. The breakfast was delicious and set us up for the day. The staff were brilliant, helping with every request. We were able to drop our bags off at 8am and got our room early. We reserved places at dinner with reception and they gave lots of help on where to visit.

We spent 4 nights at Hotel Smeraldo. Loved the location, close to Campo di Fiori. Lots of shops and restaurants. And, close to our favorite gelato shop - GROM. While Rome is more spread out, this location was within walking distance to many of the sites. Another favorite was Piazza Navaro. Lovely fountains, enjoyed the artists. The hotel staff was attentive and helpful. Breakfast was above average with pastries, meats, cheeses, cereals, fruit, etc. Nice to have breakfast before leaving for the day. Bathroom was a little small, with the smallest shower I've seen. But, we made it work. Would recommend Hotel Smeraldo.
