“great position, great value, wonderful friendly hosts”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

The Hotel is in the best position. It is two minute walk to the Spanish steps. The hotel is situated in a charming cobblestone road and is right in the heart of all the shops and sites. We stayed in a very clean and comfortable two room family suite, which is around the corner (20 metres) from the lobby. The staff are exceptionally friendly. They arranged transport for us to the Vatican at no charge in their hotel taxi. They arranged to post to us an item that we left in the room. On new years day they assisted us with a very late breakfast, outside the normal eating hours.
All in all, it was a great stay.

This was my second visit to Rome, before I had only spent a day in Rome before travelling on but I decided to stay for a few days, after searching the web I found the San Carlo, it was a decent price and looked admissible, but it was in a perfect location in the middle of everything. I didn't realise how good the location was until I arrived. The hotel was just around the corner from the Spanish Steps and surrounded with boutique shops and really good restaurants. The hotel is pretty basic but you get what you pay for and would recommend for a short stay. It's for people who shall spend the uttermost of the day exploring rather than in their hotel room. It's only a short distance away from Vatican City and other tourist parts of the city. Breakfast is included, its basic but fine. It wasn't loud from the streets but was when people walked past the room in the early hours of the morning which was frustrating. The rooms are clean and pleasantly decorated, I had a small terrace which was nice. Overall it's what I expected when I booked there were no surprises. I would probably try a different hotel because it wasn't amazing however it's location would make me want to return.

Room Tip: Try and get a terrace, it's relaxing to sit outside.

This was our second stay at this gorgeous quaint hotel. We were pleasantly surprised as the place had been renovated and even more appealing. The position is brilliant as you are surrounded by some of the best clothing shops in Rome and, an added bonus, there is a fabulous deli, food market and supermarket around the corner. Breakfast is outstanding as the variety of food has certainly expanded. The coffee was hot;there were fruit juices, yogurts, fresh fruit, cheese, meat, bread, muffins and cakes. Breakfast is served in the roof garden. Even though it was winter, there were heaters to keep you warm and comfortable. Many restaurants were closed but the reception was happy to assist us with our enquiries. The room (76) was spacious, clean and quiet. We look forward to returning in the near future.

Room Tip: Room 76 was quiet and in the non smoking section.

Stayed at hotel a few years ago before the renovations. What a pleasant surprise to be back.
The room feels fresh, breakfast area on the roof top is large and I can just imagine in summer would be a great place to start your day.
Location is no better if you want stay near the Spanish Steps.
Shower has good pressure, the heating if anything is maybe too efficient, but by opening the window (not much of a view) helped to regulate the temperature. We will be back...

We have been staying at the San Carlo since at least 2005, whenever we visit Rome - which is usually two or three times each year. This is exactly the type of hotel In which I feel most comfortable - one with about 50 rooms, with friendly, helpful, competent staff who are there year after year, with a terrific location and which is priced right. The San Carlo ticks all of those boxes for me.

The staff I have most of my dealings with are manager, Alberto, front desk staff Victoria and Rosanna and Dante, who smilingly does anything which needs to be done including helping with breakfast and transporting luggage. Antonella does an outstanding job preparing and serving breakfast, which has expanded tremendously over the years. I was very happy this time to find that my favorite rolls - rosette - have returned to the breakfast bread basket.

Rooms are spotless and there is a maintenance man who is always painting and making minor repairs to walls which have been nicked and scraped. There have been so many upgrades to this hotel since we first starting staying here that I have lost count. The bed was very comfortable and it seemed as though the mattress was brand new. The wi-fi worked perfectly - even on the 4th floor where our room was located

There were two nice improvements this time, which were done by others, but from which the San Carlo benefitted. The via della Carrozza was repaved and it is now possible to wheel your luggage from the Spagna Metro station without it bouncing all over. Also, the Profumo Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella opened a branch of their store next door to the San Carlo. You can smell the wonderful scents a block away and the hotel lobby smells beautifully fragrant.

Given the outstanding staff, the location, the amenities and the price, I cannot imagine staying anywhere else in Rome.

We stayed at the Hotel San Carlo for a week and had a great time. The hotel is in a fantastic location a couple of hundred yards from the Spanish Steps and the metro.
The room was quite small but had everything you need, a large wardrobe with safe, tv, kettle, fridge etc. The ensuite bathroom was very spacious.
Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was everything you would expect in a European hotel and much more, I can't eat wheat or dairy and they offered alternatives and remembered each day to bring me something before I asked.
The staff were helpful and friendly especially at breakfast time.
I'd recommend staying at this hotel, you won't be disappointed.

The staff was very friendly. Centrally located to all the major attractions. Good restaurants suggestions and a very satisfying breakfast. Rooms were a good size, with a decent size bath. I would certainly stay again.
