If you are in Rome with a Tour Group (e.g. TopDeck) - HIGHLY recommend doing the optional guided tour of the Vatican Museums. If you're a FIT traveller, then I highly recommend buying the tickets online together with a guided tour - you don't have to join the super long queue (take the short one).

We got a Tour Guide named Jill, and not only was she a Doctor of some sort - her knowledge of the history of Christianity/Catholicism was well grounded, her appreciation and knowledge of art was amazing, and all that plus her passion made the whole Vatican Museum Tour unbelievably special.

We went to the Vatican Museum to mainly see the Sistine Chapel of course. I had done research prior to our trip and ended up buying our tickets online for a specified time slot. THE BEST DECISION EVER. We arrived and the line (in February!) was around the corner, at least 1 1/2 hrs. With our tickets in hand, we skipped the line, went to the special "online tickets" entrance and waited in the short 5 minute security line and proceeded to the museum. You must walk through the actual museum to get to the Sistine Chapel (About 1/2 hr walk) so we walked rather quickly, stopped only in the Rafaello galleries, before proceeding to the Sistine Chapel. It is beyond words and just breathtaking. From there, we proceeded to St. Peter's Basilica and climbed the dome, which is highly recommended as well. Just beware, its over 500 steps up, but the view is incredible!

We spent only one day in Rome, we took a cruise and we arranged the transportation from Civitavecchia and a private visit of Rome with Vatican Museums - Private Tours, July was very nice and gave us a lot of info. We met our driver Stefano, he picked us right up at the ship. He took us to the Vatican Museums where we met Susana, she was really great and the Sixtine Chapel was breathtaking. We did the tour of the city in 3 hours and the Vatican Tour. At the begining we thought that was a bit pricey but at the end of the day, it was worth every penny! We saw so many places all the must in Rome in comfort with A/C. And at the end of the day Stefano and Susana took us for the best "gelato"!!!

Our 5 day 4 night coach tour was well organized covering Florence,Pisa,Venice and cities on the way back to Rome. The tour that we were on was not classified as 5 star, but the quality of the bus ,the bus driver and particularly our guide Susana was 5 star at its best.Susana was amazing with her ability to fluently switch from at least 3 languages without showing any preference for anyone in particular. We have been on many tours over the years and would like to state that we have not had a better guide. When wishing to see the highlites and the history of places of interest ,a guide is not a luxury ,they are a necessity. The hotels selected in the tour package were 3 star, they were clean, comfortable with reasonable meals, the only down side was the shower facilities.
