“Great location, poor facility, poorer staff”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The hotel is very centrally located. An easy 2-20 minute walk to most of the sights, but there are others nearby that can claim the same thing. The day-clerk at the desk is very unhelpful and unfriendly. He seems inconvenienced by every simple request, including adjustment of our room's climate controls (which are handled 100% from front desk - you have no control over them at all).
The room was made up daily and was cleaned, but there is mould growing in the shower in several places. The showers have to be short as the water doesn't drain well and you risk flooding your bathroom.
The beds are like hardwood boards and the pillows are about 2 inches thick they are so old and flat.
Breakfast was as promised, pastry + hot / cold drinks. Simple and decent. However the dining area is extremely small, crowded and loud as a result of the TV cranked up to defcon 7 and playing loud music videos which everyone had to shout over. No en-suite coffee / tea provided.
No free wifi as advertised - actually your first 5 minutes is free as a trial, then it's a pre-paid system. Unacceptable - as we book based on wifi availability. Also the rooms are not smoke-free.
This hotel has potential but there are dozens of little things that add up to an unpleasant stay. Two-star on a good day until they root out some of their issues (new pillows would be a great start, as well as keeping the wifi promise).

Room Tip: Try to choose a room that doesn't face Piazza San Silvestro or Via Gambero, as they late night n...

Although this hotel is dated and a little warn around the edges, it is in a great location. Minutes walk to Spansih steps and the Trevi fountain, plus very close to the metro, you can't go wrong staying here.
We were greeted by a lovely man at reception, who was really helpful in guiding us to the local attractions and recommending great places to eat. He wroks all the time, when we left in the morning he was there and when we woke up he was still there making us a coffee.
It was a little annoying that we had to call reception to adjust our air conditioning. You also have to pay for Wifi, we chose not to take up that option.
Breakfast was good, with fresh espresso made to order. With a location like this you would have to stay here again, I only hope they decide to update the bed covers and maybe move out some of the very "tired" furniture from each room.
There is a lift, which is a bonus, as we were very tired of climbing stairs with our luggage, just a tip, if you dont like lifts then maybe give this one a miss as its tiny.

Warm and friendly hotel absolutely ideal for all the main attractions in Rome staff are very friendly and helpful .The rooms were quite small but cleaned daily and comfortable. The furniture was slightly old and worn. It had oddities like ringing for air con to be turned up and a two person lift. Breakfast was adequate. Lacked tea making facilities. Wifi could be bought for 5 euro for 3 hours but not continuous use.

The Hotel San Silvestro is a small, well kept, reasonably priced and very clean hotel located in the heart of Rome. A very short walk gets you to Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Forum and many other famous sites in Rome. The room was a bit small to be accommodation for 3 adults, but was well kept and cleaned and quite comfortable. The staff are tremendously helpful and had good recommendations for near by food. As others have said, the hotel has its quirks and the furniture is a bit old and slightly worn. Nothing that I found distressing, however. Their willingness to help and accommodate each guest individually is truly wonderful.

Don't be fooled by the photos! This is a shabby, tired and very depressing hotel. Granted it is in a very good situation for the main sights. The rooms were clean and the sheets of good quality but the bedspreads , rugs and furniture were more like a 1970s student flat! We were greeted by the Roman version of Basil Fawlty who couldn't even say hello! To be fair he was the only member of staff like this. The breakfast room was rediculously small but the coffee and morning rolls were good. Would not dream of going ther again!

Despite the somewhat outdated furniture, this turned out to be a very clean, quaint small hotel with wonderful staff. Well located for easy walk to Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Pantheon and equally easy to get to busses and metro. Only maybe 2 dozen rooms, but 24-hour front desk. funny little oddities like a two-person elevator, and having to call the desk to adjust your air conditioning since the rooms themselves don't have controls. But...they are VERY accomodating with all requests whether for "more air", directions, recommendations etc. Well worth the price which was lower that others we have stayed at. Nice, simple continental b'fast included.

Room Tip: The upper (3rd) floor is NOT serviced by the elevator so you and your luggage have one flight of sta...

Just got back from a long weekend staying at San Silvestro. It is in a great location very central to all the sights. Few minutes walk to Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. 20 mins to Colosseum and 25 to Vatican. Hotel rooms small and basic but comfortable and has air conditioning which is a must. Staff very freindly and breakfast simple but tasty especially the cappuccino. Loads of restaurants nearby and spar round the corner. We took our own kettle and coffee and as there is a fridge in the room, it was great for keeping milk and water cold.

A few tips: Avoid photo with Roman soldier!! You can get a joint ticket for Panatine Hill and Colosseum. If you buy this at Panatine Hill, you can walk straight into colosseum and avoid the enormous queue. I would recommend buying your ticket for Vatican museum on line before you go. We ended up queuing for hours, not much fun but worth the wait.

Would also recommend visiting Borgheuse park, we hired some segways (10euro) they were brilliant fun.

We booked a taxi from the airport through Best Airport Transfers. It was quite expensive 80 euro return, but they offered a great service delivering us to the hotel very quickly and picking us up right on time. It saved faffing with buses and trains and well worth it.
