We stayed in Des Artistes on our honeymoon 12 years ago, and finally returned recently for 4 nights before heading south. Thankfully, it was as good as we remembered, with great staff, an absolutely beautiful room (better than many 5* hotel rooms we have had), and the wonderful roof garden, where we would relax with a bottle of wine after a day's sightseeing.
Having stayed in many different areas of the city over the years, Des Artistes other big plus is its location. Despite being within walking distance of Termini (which, like many big city train stations, is not the most attractive area), Des Artistes is also close to many of Rome's diplomatic missions, so the area feels very safe. It is also right next to Castro Pretoria metro station, for direct links to the rest of the transport network.
Reception, as many people have pointed out, is on the 5th floor, and the lift is very slow and cramped. I would advise leaving your luggage with the concierge at the entrance when you arrive, until you find out which floor your room is on.More
