“Comfortable hotel in a stately area”
Reviewed January 17, 2007

We have just come back from a short break in Rome, where we stayed in the Hotel Bailey on a recommendation from a friend. We had a good-sized room (604) which was very clean and comfortable, with an adequate marble bathroom.

The hotel is a little bit away from the main tourist sites, but we had no problem with that, and there are a number of restaurants and cafes nearby that are not remotely touristy, which is nice in such a busy, touristy city.

We were very happy with the hotel and its environs. It is a pleasant walk to the Spanish Steps, and from there to the various other attractions. If your feet become tired, as they inevitably will in a city like Rome with all its marble floors, taxis are very good value. We took a taxi from Trastevere back to the hotel on Sunday afternoon (not much traffic, but higher rates apply) and it was only about €8. Rome is a city to walk around, but after a hard day's sightseeing, taking a taxi back to the hotel is a sensible option.

If you don't want to make your way back into the tourist centre of the city, the nearby Ristorante la Lampada serves good home-made pasta.

When you go to a city primarily for the sightseeing, the grandeur of your hotel is immaterial. The Bailey is very comfortable (though I thought the breakfast coffee was fairly bad), and the perfect spot to come back to in the evenings.

On the subject of sightseeing, the suburb of EUR (take the metro to EUR Termi) has wonderful examples of 'fascist classical' architecture to provide a cultural counterpoint to the mainly renaissance charms of the city.

We stayed at Hotel Bailey from Dec 30-Jan 4, 2007. It is a beautiful hotel...charming, well decorated. The staff was also very friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, the location is somewhat removed from all the piazzas you'll want to be near at night (for dinners, bars, people-watching.) Also, the metro in Rome is quite minimal, and Hotel Bailey is a walk from the nearest metro, in a somewhat sketchy area at night.
Additionally, with all the walking and sight-seeing you'll do during the day in Rome, the 20 minute walk to a good area isn't that appealing.
The breakfast was also pretty bad. The pastries and fruit seemed very old and stale. But it's free, so whatever.

All in all, I would not choose this hotel again based purely on location. If you're a big taxi person anyway, then this a beautiful old hotel.

This Hotel is Overated.... We booked because it had great reviews and accetable price but we were dissapointed.

-We were offered a room with a view to a terrace, our view was to the fire stairway.
-TV no good.
-We were on the 6th floor the elevator was very slow and only to persons could fit.
-Gret Breakfast. (it was included in our tate 150 € per night)

I think it was a little bit far from rome center and the vatican.

Stayed at the Baileys for three nights with friends for my 40th. Booked this hotel following the excellent reviews on this site.
On arrival very warm and welcoming, this level of customer service continued throughout the stay from all members of staff.
Our room was probably the smallest type, but clean, well furnished and we are always suckers for the towelling robes and mini bar. One thing to note though there was not an external window in the room, only one that opened into the stairwell.
Breakfast was great with good service and can reiterate the numerous comments about great coffee.
There is a bar, but a bit hit and miss on when it is open, but plenty of alternatives around the hotel.
Food wise we ate at three restaurants within 150 meters of the hotel, ask the lady on reception which she recommends and you won’t be disappointed.
Location is spot on, quiet street but within easy walking distance of Termini / Metro and all attractions.
Would definitely go back to Baileys if every returned to Rome!

  • Disliked — No external windows in room, but that is being a tad harsh

We decided on Rome for our 25th Wedding Anniversary and so looked for a good comfortable hotel. We were attracted by the reviews Baileys had on TripAdvisor. We booked the Hotel on the hotels website and found it clear and easy. We arrived in Rome on the Leonardo train from Fiumicino Airport to the Termini station. This Station is very large and we suggest you stay inside the station and walk past the other platforms leaving the station by the main entrance where the ticket offices and shops are, this can take upto 10 minutes! Fom this point the hotel is 10 to 15 minutes walk. The hotel is on a road parallel to the 'Via XX Settembre". Via Flavia is quiet with a mixture of Hotels Restaurants and small businesses. Baileys is a small hotel but is well appointed and nicely decorated, our room was larger than we had been led to expect for Rome. The service provided in all aspects of the hotel was exemplary. Whilst one expects the hotel to act on any problems you may point out, I was surprised when I noticed one of the light bulbs in our room was out as we left for a walk to the coliseum one morning, on our return the bulb had been replaced without us mentioning it at all! It shows the sort of care taken by all the staff.
The breakfast buffet was nicely presented with a sufficient choice to accommodate our tastes. We found the hotel to be convenient for the major sites and although in Rome you should expect to have to walk we found the routes enjoyable and not too strenuous. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Entering my 40 th, my wife Lina surprised me and took me to Rome.
What a better place to stay than the Bailey's Hotel. It wasn't in the middle of the noise and clutter but no more than 15-20 minutes away from the sights.
Once you get your bearings within a day or so you'd see and understand how close you are to these places.
If you need help definitely ask Simona at the front desk. Simona will send you on your way which will be just right.
Go on a tour to Florence. Highly recommended.
The hotel atmosphere wasn't grand but just right. Room was comfortable enough for two ( not that you'd want to stay inside with all to see) and the bathroom was always clean.
The breakfast was astonishing. Great service! and Excellent coffee (American). Must wake up early enough to taste the fresh eggs!
At night if you're hungry from walking and shopping all day, across the street from Bailey's hotel exiting left a block away, try theGreek food from Mythos, or the assorted food from the snack shop in front of the Newsstand. Make sure you don't buy from the snack shops near the tourist areas, they tend to overcharge, ie. 3,95 for 1 warm Coke or ask how much before you sit down.
Over all Bailey's hotel was exactly what we needed not too much and not to little. With excellent service and no complaints! Any questions, always ask Simona she'd know what to do for you, and she always does it with a smile! Bravo to Baley's and the staff.
