“A family room in Rome!”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Trying to find a ‘family’ room in Rome is almost like asking for a private audience with the Pope, but after a few days searching we finally came across the Franklin! The hotel didn’t have the pool we were after, but did have a PS3 in the room. The children now declare that a PS3 in the room is better value than a pool and to them this was ‘the best hotel ever’, so on that score it was a winner!

Once you have found your way to slightly off-map location (we did make it by walking from the metro), the music themed hotel is very welcoming. A small, but enterprising lobby, seamless check in (as the room was ready they were happy to check us in early for our two night stay) and a great room full of musical references and features. There was a treasure hunt for the kids, which they loved. PS3 games and board games were provided too and both the board games and the PS3 received good use. The only thing missing from the room is a curtain (or door!) dividing the area with the sofa-bed and the bed, so that you can watch the news while the children are playing the PS3!

The family rooms are on the ground floor and have access to some outside space too (which we didn’t use, but in hotter weather may well have done). The room has enough space for a family of four, but if you have lots of large luggage you may struggle to fit everything in. There were plenty of towels in the bathroom, Sky Italia on a large screen television (probably the widest range of TV channels available that I have ever come across in a hotel) and the breakfast was great (although traditionally continental, so lovers of a full cooked breakfast would be disappointed).

The hotel is only about 10 minutes from the Vatican and the closest metro station, although to some it may still seem too far away from the action. If you’re happy to walk then the location is no problem at all. Ambient hotel noise (e.g. toilets flushing, high heels on the floor above) did cause a bit if disruption to me, but these things and subsequent irritation level depend widely on the type of person you are.

One other thing that bothered my wife was the irregular shaped wooden bed frame, which despite looking great, meant she walked into it several times and banged her leg. Someone who gets out of bed on the ‘right’ side would not be aware of this problem, but it is worth mentioning.

On our departure the hotel arranged a taxi transfer from the hotel to the airport (FCO), which was an interesting experience. I thought India was bad, but I hadn’t taken a taxi in Rome until this trip! Still, at €45 for four it was a good value (and quick) ride!

We would happily stay at this hotel again.

We chose Franklin Feel the Sound Hotel for the first of our four nights in Rome specifically because we had a very early audience with the Pope the next morning and it was in the Vatican area. To be honest, when the taxi pulled up to the hotel - on a side street in a busy area - and we walked up to a glass door facing a steep staircase, we thought "Uh oh - tiny Best Western hotel, no elevator - this may be a mistake!" How wrong we were! The hotel turned out to be a meticulously maintained small boutique hotel (with elevator) with a friendly front desk staff, a welcoming lobby with water and juices, funky music-themed decor, quiet, clean and comfortable rooms with a full bathtub (rare in European cities), air conditioning with an in-room thermostat (also rare in Europe) and an array of bath amenities that rivals any top-rated hotel I've stayed in. Our room had a Romeo & Juliet mini-balcony overlooking the street, and our soundproof windows and room darkening shutters and drapes made for a sound sleep. A great hotel experience in a big city!

This is a small hotel on a quiet residential street in the Vatican City. The hotel has a modern feel to it. The hotel staff was nice but they are not there at night. The hotel is about 8-9 blocks away from the closest train station. Access to the train is a must to be able to get around in Rome, so expect a walk. We liked the hotel because after several long days touring in the busy, bustling city of Rome, the Vatican and all the ancient sites, we were excited to get to a nice, quiet area. There were several amazing and super friendly restaurants near the hotel. I highly recommend Taverna Romano, across from the hotel. Best meatballs, wine and cheesecake we have ever had. They also were gay friendly. The hotel itself had a mediocre breakfast consisting of pastries, boiled eggs, cheese, yogurt and assorted deli meats. Our room was tiny, smaller than any dorm room I remember. However, it was cozy enough and the bed slept very well. We will consider staying again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with 2 twin beds, opposed to a queen. These rooms seemed larger, and you can push th...

This hotel has a very cool music theme that made it interesting to stay at. There's a disco ball in the bathroom! Our first impression after arriving in Rome by train and taking a taxi was not so great, we kind of felt like we were getting dropped off at someone's apartment on a random side street rather than at a hotel. Once you walk inside, that all changes. The location is not the best for sightseeing in Rome - it's a 10-15 minute-walk from the Vatican, and about 10 minutes to the Ottaviano Metro Stop. Many of the places you might want to see are a bit out-of-the way, but it's not totally unreasonable. The room and bathroom were modern and very clean. For the price, this is a pretty nice place to stay in Rome.

If you are looking for an hostel-like quality you'll be defnitely satisfied, although the price is a 4 star hotel. unacceptable low level of service, sound-proofing and cleanlingness. I would not recommend it and I am quite surprised of the overall positive feedback.

Beautiful small hotel with a musical theme, immaculately clean, very modern ,10 minute walk from Vatican city, hotel staff amazingly helpful (no request to much to ask)
Continental breakfast is very good, reception area has a huge supply of Music CDs for you room that can be played on the Bang and Olufsen system!!
Each day there was a fresh selection of cakes and fruit juices available in reception
WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO EVERYONE...

Room Tip: we had 5 rooms between us in total, all were lovely, modern, clean, with a high standard of fitments...

We loved the Franklin. It looks unprepossessing outside but the moment you walk in, it is unusual and stylish. There's no conventional Reception , just a computer terminal and a friendly Receptionist , in a Reception choc-full of CDs to borrow as well as Guide Books and information.
Our room was relatively small but very comfortable. There's a great Bang and Olufsen CD player as well as a TV with all the terrible TV programmes that dear old Uncle Silvio let's you have- stick with the music was our view.
The bed was comfortable with an attractive canopy. The music theme extended to snare drums as bedside tables and a glitter ball in the bathroom. We had a nice balcony looking out on the rear garden. Overall it was comfortable, stylish and fun. The framed NewYork skyline made of cheese graters was a perfect example of the style and wit of the place.
Breakfast was decent, it could be taken in the breakfast room or the small garden.
Location in Prati was safe-feeling and in a nice area. It was not far to Ottoviano Subway station which could take you to the Spanish Steps, near the Trevi Fountain or to the Colosseum (with 1 change). Very accessible for the Vatican but found the atmosphere round there rather oppressive- it was a relief to get to Piazza de Risorgimento where Italy and Rome began again and the Vatican ended.
