“Great family stay in Rome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2014

Our family of 5 stayed here for 4 nights in May of 2014. We were very happy! It was quiet, cool, and a welcoming refuge from the craziness of the city.

One of the challenges of traveling with 3 children is that it's hard to find hotels that can put you all in one room, and hard to arrange (and afford) separate rooms right next to each other. Hotel Sonya was able to fit us all in one room... one double bed and three reasonably comfortable fold-aways. It was a tight fit, but it worked. The room was simple but clean and blessedly air-conditioned, with a wardrobe and a desk and a small refrigerator. The bathroom was roomy, with modern fixtures and a great shower (no tub) and a hair dryer. And a bidet :) The window had shutters that let in air but not eyes when window was opened, and could also be closed light-tight for closed-window sleeping. With the window closed the room was wonderfully quiet, with no problems with noise from other rooms.

Wifi was free (yay!), though the first night we didn't get good reception inside the room. Subsequent nights it worked just fine. There were also laptops in the lobby for customer use, though we never availed ourselves of them.

Location was good. It was a 6-block walk to the Termini train station... a little further than my ideal, but worked well enough, and once we were at Termini we could get anywhere we needed. There were restaurants and convenience shops and an ATM nearby, and a laundromat only half a block away. No particularly stellar views of anything. We were on the 5th floor, with the window looking out onto a side street... elevator was old-fashioned but functioned well and was roomier than most we've encountered in Europe. Small lobby (no lounge space) but two decent-sized breakfast rooms.

The hotel staff was wonderful. They stored our bags, gave us a map, arranged our airport transport for the trip home and helped us with our various questions. They were particularly sweet to the kids, putting candy and fruit in their hands whenever we passed through. The serving staff for breakfast were always cheerful and attentive. Breakfast itself was not our favorite, but it was perfectly adequate... eggs and cheese and cold-cuts and fruit and yogurt and varying kinds of breads and pastries.

It's not a fancy luxury hotel, but it met our needs quite nicely. Would recommend it to others, particularly families.

Hotel Sonya is in a quiet area, but close to the central train station, hop on hop off stops, and a quick walk to most attractions in Rome. The rooms were clean, and breakfast was very substantial. Would stay again, and would definitely recommend.

Hotel Sonya offers 34 rooms that are well equipped, tidy, and completely lovely when used as a home base for your days of touring Rome. The breakfast is hearty and they were more than happy to make coffee, cappuccino, or bring juice.

Ten minutes or less to Termini subway and train station, The National Museum, several interesting churches, Piazza Repubblica, and the Opera is across the street. Most of the main sites people want to visit in Rome are less than a half hour walk, or a few subway stops away. We walked easily from the Borghese Gallery and liked being close to easy transportation.

Many good restaurants in the neighborhood.

We paid 150 euros for a double.

Room Tip: Go to a lower floor as elevator is ancient and slow, and only holds 2-3 people per trip.

All the glowing reviews of this property are spot-on! Very well located within 15-20 minutes walking distance of everything you want to see, very nicely remodeled rooms and great service.

We stayed at the (very recently added?) sister hotel just down the street, Hotel Opera, and as the bellman said, the only difference between Opera and Sonya is the name, address and Wi-Fi password (Opera may have a slight edge as it is located on a quieter, less traffic-filled street). One note: if you are seeking English language channels in your room, be prepared for a dual cable TV system (with five or six good English channels). We couldn't figure it out and called the front desk--here began the best part of the stay.

The evening desk clerk, Litu, promptly arrived at our room and set it up for us, patiently explaining how it worked. From that point on, he was the most gracious, helpful hotel employee I have ever experienced. Nothing was too big or too small for him to help with, from extra towels to city directions to excellent restaurant recommendations. And was ALWAYS warm and smiling!

My sister and I stayed here 3 nights in March with the Rick Steve's tour. We arrived a day early to get over jet lag and to just stroll around on our own, my sister had been to Rome 5 years earlier. It is just a short walk from the Termini main station, very convenient!! There are a couple different metro stops close by too!! Many restaurants and pubs near by too! The service for breakfast was the best we had in our 10 days on our tour!! We drank many espresso's and cappacciono's each morning, the young men did very well to keep our cups full!!!! Our room was very nice, plenty of room for the two of us. We even kept our window open until 5:00 am until the trucks started driving down the street and woke us up. We felt very safe being two women walking around by ourselves at night too! The hotel is very safe with the entrance locked and the hallways too. You need your key to enter the area where your rooms are after 3:00 in the afternoon. We did get a discount for our night before the tour started by paying cash. It was nice to be off the main busy tourist area, within walking distance to many sites. I would stay there again and it is very well worth the $$ without be overpriced for central location, safety and quiet. Grazie!! Kim

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Sonya and were not disappointed. The rooms were clean and well appointed and after 24 hours of flying the comfortable bed was most welcome. The breakfast was lovely and very palatable with the wonderful coffee giving us a great kick start to a days sightseeing. All of the above is what every hotel should offer but the one thing that makes the Sonya stand out is its staff. Friendly courteous and always willing to help made for a great stay. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we will be staying there again when we are next in Rome

I booked Hotel Sonya based on the TA reviews and also their room rate was within my budget. We booked a quad room for 3 nights from 12 April. They are very responsive to my various queries and mails prior to my arrival. They also have honored my request to provide a front view room. We have visited all attractions by walking such as; Coliseum, Trivi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona etc. etc. There are plenty of restaurants, hotels, bars and eateries very close to Hotel Sonya. Their breakfast is awesome, plenty of items available for breakfast. In fact we managed our day with heavy breakfast and skipped our lunch for 2 days due to hectic travel plans. Termini Station is only 5 minutes walking from the hotel and there is street market just behind the hotel in the morning where one can buy cloths, bags, fruits, vegetables and many more. Room was spacious, bathroom was quite OK with lots of fresh towels for different use (hand towel, bath towel etc.), changing linen daily basis. There was slight problem with hot water in shower; there was no consistency in hot water flow. There were 3 receptionists in front desk during our stay all of them were very helpful. They provide correct guidance on how to reach attractions and information about buses and trains. They also warned me on the very first day that I should cautious about pick pockets of Termini area and buses. My first day in Rome was upset such that despite of the warning by the receptionist and reading in TA forums and taking more care I was pick pocked 300 Euro in bus 64 while travelling from Piazza Navona to Termini in the night.

Service at the breakfast was wonderful by 2 young guys (I don't remember their name) who were well mannered and with smiling face always.

I found nothing to write negative about Hotel Sonya except the hot water issue. I recommend this hotel for budget travelers. If I come back to Rome no doubt I will be staying with Hotel Sonya only.
