Our family of 5 stayed here for 4 nights in May of 2014. We were very happy! It was quiet, cool, and a welcoming refuge from the craziness of the city.
One of the challenges of traveling with 3 children is that it's hard to find hotels that can put you all in one room, and hard to arrange (and afford) separate rooms right next to each other. Hotel Sonya was able to fit us all in one room... one double bed and three reasonably comfortable fold-aways. It was a tight fit, but it worked. The room was simple but clean and blessedly air-conditioned, with a wardrobe and a desk and a small refrigerator. The bathroom was roomy, with modern fixtures and a great shower (no tub) and a hair dryer. And a bidet :) The window had shutters that let in air but not eyes when window was opened, and could also be closed light-tight for closed-window sleeping. With the window closed the room was wonderfully quiet, with no problems with noise from other rooms.
Wifi was free (yay!), though the first night we didn't get good reception inside the room. Subsequent nights it worked just fine. There were also laptops in the lobby for customer use, though we never availed ourselves of them.
Location was good. It was a 6-block walk to the Termini train station... a little further than my ideal, but worked well enough, and once we were at Termini we could get anywhere we needed. There were restaurants and convenience shops and an ATM nearby, and a laundromat only half a block away. No particularly stellar views of anything. We were on the 5th floor, with the window looking out onto a side street... elevator was old-fashioned but functioned well and was roomier than most we've encountered in Europe. Small lobby (no lounge space) but two decent-sized breakfast rooms.
The hotel staff was wonderful. They stored our bags, gave us a map, arranged our airport transport for the trip home and helped us with our various questions. They were particularly sweet to the kids, putting candy and fruit in their hands whenever we passed through. The serving staff for breakfast were always cheerful and attentive. Breakfast itself was not our favorite, but it was perfectly adequate... eggs and cheese and cold-cuts and fruit and yogurt and varying kinds of breads and pastries.
It's not a fancy luxury hotel, but it met our needs quite nicely. Would recommend it to others, particularly families.
