“Strange but nice”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

We booked our stay at Hotel Sonya but were moved to another hotel Hotel Opera Roma and were told it was their sister hotel. Our stay was nice, strange room, we had a three person room with the bathroom in the basement. Great location, good food nearby, 15 minute walk to the colosseum. I just wish they would have been up front that we were moved, after a long travel day we had to drag our bags around the corner and down another block.

Room Tip: The three person room we had was quite large and quiet. No view but it didn't matter.

Very comfortable, renovated rooms, great breakfast, affordable. Clean, friendly. The front desk were very helpful with all of our questions. The rooms were spacious and quiet. There was an elevator, which was small but great for not carrying all luggage up the and down the stairs. I felt safe and would stay again and recommend.

We reserved a room at Hotel Sonya in January for an October visit. Somehow, even with a 9 month reservation we didn't get a room at Hotel Sonya. After we checked in we were told we were "lucky" and had a room at the newer part of the hotel....except the hotel was across a street and down another street at the Hotel Opera. The room was clean but small...even for Rome standards. With the exception of one staff member, The staff was less than helpful with questions about directions or recommendations for dinner. It got me wondering how this place was able to rate a Rick Steve's recommendation. The breakfast was good....maybe that's how.

We booked this hotel for two separate nights - one in September and one in October, at each end of our trip. I too was aware that we might get the bait and switch and we did for our night in September. You can read our review of the Hotel Opera there. The last night of our trip we did get to stay at the Sonya and we were given a room that would have slept three. Not sure why, but it was a very spacious room that overlooked a couryard (not a fancy one though). I had the best nights sleeps at both these hotels due to the kind of pillows they use. Wish I knew what they were. The beds are firm but we're used to that. There are at least two computers that you can use in the reception room on the main floor. The breakfast was exactly the same at both hotels with delicious cappucino (or latte or whatever you wish), lovely croissants, an egg dish, a vegetable pie?, yogurt, cold cereals, cold meats, cheese and a few cakes, which we didn't try, fresh fruit and OJ which is delivered to your table. It is so convenient to Roma Termini. Don't take a taxi unless it's raining. It is very easy to find. We walked everywhere, the furthest place being the Colusseum. If you like walking it's not too far. If you want a nice inexpensive dinner go to Est, Est, Est, which is a five minute walk at most.

We stayed at the Hotel Sonya for three nights and the rooms and bathrooms were spacious, for European standards. The hotel was quiet and in a good location to walk to most of the major momuments in Rome. The breakfast was plentiful and the staff was very nice and accommodating. They did try to send us to their sister hotel when we arrived, but we told them that we wanted to stay at the Hotel Sonya and they obliged. We had heard from other people that they try to send you to their other hotel, so you need to be aware of this. That was the only negative, otherwise, it's a really nice hotel in a good location. I would recommend staying at this time if you are visiting Rome.

We stayed at the Hotel Sonya for five days (3 as part of a Rick Steves tour and 2 on our own afterwards) and were very pleased with the accommodations. Our room was on the first floor (117) and while on the small side it was well appointed with an air conditioner that worked and very comfortable. The room had a nice queen-sized bed, the free wi-fi coverage was good, and a slightly small but adequate bathroom with an acceptable sized shower stall, hair dryer, shampoo, and soap. Breakfast was quite decent with a wide range of items (yogurt, cereal, baked goods, boiled eggs, cold cuts/ cheese, quiche and fresh fruit). Individually made cappuccino or coffee plus juice were delivered to your table in one of three breakfast rooms. For the most part, all the staff were gracious (especially in the breakfast rooms), and very helpful.

The location is ideal for exploring Rome. The Coliseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps are all within easy walking distance. The Repubblica metro stop and Termini station were only 10 minutes away and the two major “tourist” bus lines (#40 and 64) were only a block up the street. Also, there were several good restaurants within a few blocks.

The Hotel Sonya provided a good mix of value and location and we would definitely stay here again.

Hotel Sonya is conveniently located close to the termini station, but it's a bit of a walk to most of Rome's sights. There are several good restaurants in the neighborhood. The rooms have been nicely updated, were clean, and the service was fine.
