“Good location, good hotel”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

We spent 4 nights at Hotel Sonya at the beginning of May. Hotel Sonya is in a good location and a 10-15 minute walk to the Coloseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum. The hotel has a quaint elevator, the type that looks like a cage. It can be a wait at times because the elevator will only take 2-3 people. It will not stop if it is already occupied. There are stairs if you are inclined, but we were on the 7th floor which made it less practical. The room and bed were comfortable, the breakfast was an ample European meal. The staff was helpful with any questions you had. The restaurant right next door was an excellent choice for our last night.

The desk folks were generally okay, the room was clean and we were only a short walk to several places including the hop-on-hop-off and Termini. Breakfast in the morning was nice with a typical European style breakfast. Two important notes: the lobby of the hotel is on the second floor...steps up with suitcases etc. The lift is functional but small. Most importantly, the shower had doors vs. a curtain and I personally didn't fit in and my wife barely did. I understand it's "Europe" but if you cater to modern needs scrap the bidet and make the shower usable, IMHO. I think we got a fair rate so think it was an okay experience, would check on logistics a little better next time.

This is a review of a booking for Hotel Sonya and a "reservation switch" by them to a hotel they just acquired - Hotel Opera Roma.

Booked Hotel Sonya and had the taxi drop us off in front and we brought our luggage up the steps into the lobby to check in. Had a lot of luggage since we just disembarked from a cruise ship. So we get to the front desk and were told that although we booked Hotel Sonya, they have expanded and taken over another hotel a block AWAY, and THAT is where we would be staying (same price and terms). Although they did offer to transfer our luggage for us, we were somewhat taken aback by this and decided to drag it there ourselves in case it was not up to par. This was NOT fun whatsoever as we did not know what was ahead, and the luggage was very heavy (even with 4 wheels).

We arrive a block away at another hotel (Hotel Opera Roma), and it seemed nice enough. The staff was pleasant and helpful at both places; however, it seems deceptive (and extremely inconvenient) that they did not tell us to just have the taxi drop us at the OTHER hotel from the start. Kind of a bait and switch thing.

All that being said, the Hotel Opera was fine, but the whole initial experience left a bad taste. They did have Wifi and an elevator, plus a nice breakfast, although the breakfast attendant/waitress was not friendly or helpful in any way. Almost as if everyone in the breakfast room was a bother to her.

Bottom line is that the stay was fine. Hotel Opera is in a good location. Our room was a decent size, but our friends' rooms were very small. Their room safe was just sitting in the closet - not even bolted down. The linens were 'eh', the bed was like a rock and the pillows were lumpy, but the bathroom was extremely nice.

Great location--close to hop on/hop off bus, train station, great cafes and restaurants. Breakfast was wonderful--great Italian cakes, eggs, cheese, meats, cereals, juice and friendly service. Our 3rd floor room faced the street, but was quiet and comfortable. Only drawbacks--tiny shower (but it is Europe) and hard foam pillows. A small price to pay for a great place to stay.

We stayed at Hotel Sonya at the beginning and end of our trip to Italy and were delighted with our stays. We asked for and got a large, renovated room on the 5th floor of the main hotel, facing the large courtyard shared by the neighbors. The bathroom had a small window and a large, lovely shower. It was very quiet, and we experienced very little noise from anywhere in the hotel. All of the staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful, especially Ivan every morning with his large smile to greet us at the front desk. The breakfast had lots of options, so everyone should be satisfied. The orange juice could be improved, but the café latte was delicious. We arrived by the Sita airport shuttle bus (6 euros) with a walk of around 6 blocks to the hotel. We left by cab with a flat rate of 48 euros with a pickup right outside the front door. As everyone has said, it is an easy walk to many places close to the hotel and no more than 30 minutes to the farther places in Rome. It is relatively quiet in the area compared with the Colisseum, Pantheon area and around Piazza Navonna, where most of the crowds in Rome gather. The elevator is an antique which worked quite well during our visits. The wait can be long, but there are stairs also for those with impatience. We liked watching it work. We cannot say enough about the help and friendliness of the staff. It makes all the difference in your stay.

Our room was recently refurbished and very nice. We'd asked for a quiet room so they gave us one on the fifth floor with a window on the side street so it was fine. It's served by a lift that looks antique, but worked very efficiently while we were there. Reception were very helpful and the buffet breakfast was really good with plenty of variety. The situation is very convenient for getting to wherever you want in Rome
