You don’t have to be a Catholic or an Australian to book at Domus Australia and enjoy the facilities contained within. We stayed there in October for four nights, following a sixteen day Italian coach tour. During the tour we stayed in many so called “four and five star hotels” where inadequate facilities, especially bathrooms, were passed off as “Italian charm”. Most tour hotels were crowded, many with little or “delayed service”, with packed breakfast rooms the norm.
Coming off the tour experience, into Domus Australia, was like entering a whole new touring world. The room facilities are excellent. It was a delight to have showers with doors that opened and you did not trip into bathtubs to access them! Luxury hotels encourage you to use their high priced washing facilities, so it was heaven to use the laundry facilities at the Domus and the ironing board and iron provided in each room.
Early October was still warm in Rome and crowded. After a busy day walking the major sights the spacious air-conditioned rooms were welcome. The extensive range of teas and coffees provided were also appreciated.
Domus Australia is a small boutique establishment and has only been open for a year. It is one of the best kept secrets in Rome. Friends who stayed in the Domus late 2011 thoroughly recommended it and their “rave review” was indeed justified. We particularly liked the new elevators that worked!
Simply put, the location is convenient to Stazione Termini and you can walk, bus or Metro easily to main sights etc. Location, at a good price, wins every time!
Breakfast is excellent and you are able to eat at your leisure and read the newspapers provided etc. You can have dinner at the Domus, although on this stay we preferred to eat at one of the many family restaurants in the nearby area. An added bonus is a large Conrad Supermarket just down the street which enabled you to stock up your room refrigerator with discounted drinks.
The Domus Australia staff members are charming and friendly and offered to help you plan your day, organize tickets, get the right bus, arrange taxis etc. This was truly appreciated, as was the free Wifi and numerous computers for guest use.
Again I stress that Domus Austrailia while being described as a pilgrim centre, boutique guest house etc it is not just for Catholics. The establishment does have a religious flavour, but there is no effort whatsoever to evangelize, other than by providing a great facility. However, if you are anti-Catholic or anti-religious perhaps you should stay elsewhere. Otherwise, go for it!

My husband and I stayed at Domus Australia shortly following our wedding. Our second visit to Rome and Domus together and equally as good as our first. Big beds, big showers and the food!

This time we were able to enjoy drinks on the roof terrace also, an amazing sanctuary from the busy streets below. The staff at Domus really are 1st class, so approachable and friendly, nothing is a problem.

Domus is also nice and close to the action, walking distance to the attractions of Rome, a stones through from mouth watering cuisine and close to metro (Republica) and Termani stations.

We'll be back!

This boutique hotel is a true home away from home. Our room was spacious and extremely well appointed. The staff were fabulous and so helpful no matter what the request. Domus is only a short walk from the Metro and many of Rome's major sites. There are a good range of restaurants within a few metres of the hotel. We also dined in the the in house dining room and found the food and service to be great.

We will definitely stay here when next in Rome.

I found this hotel only after reading about it in Trip Advisor. It can only be booked via its own website and rooms go very quickly. It was our first time in Rome, and after we were duped by a taxi driver (Fiumicino to Domus Australia), we felt angry and mistrustful. Arriving at Domus Australia and being comforted by reception staff was just what we needed. Yes, as Australians we felt at home at this boutique hotel, but the non-Australians (mostly Americans) also seemed happy here. The room was very clean and smelled wonderful. It was always a joy to return to the hotel and to our room after a hot, humid, crowded tour of the city where you always had to be on a look out for pickpocketers, where clean toilets were scarce, and courage is required when crossing busy roads.
There are two modern lifts (can fit 3 to 4 people with luggages) and some rooms have 'accessible' features for people with disability.
Location is 15 minutes away from Termini station and a few minutes less from Republica station.
We had dinner at their restaurant one night and although the food is a bit expensive, all three dishes we had were great.
The breakfast buffet was more than adequate although it could benefit from a little variation to break the monotony.
There is a guest laundry at the top floor where you can wash a big load for 5 Euros and dry it for another 5 Euros (although it might need a second round of drying).
There is a beautiful chapel in the premises and I heard morning Mass there twice, one officiated by Cardinal Pell of Australia. Reception, restaurant and housekeeping staff were all friendly and accommodating.
In fact, after a 3 day stay followed by a short trip to Florence, we returned here for a one night stay before leaving Rome for Asia. There are cheaper options around the area but staying here was definitely worth it because we felt safe and relaxed here.
This hotel truly deserves its excellent rating. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room facing the courtyard is quieter.

Our Parish group recently stayed here and the staff were very friendly in accommodating our needs. The food was excellent and the rooms were fine with large beds and the tea and coffee making facilities were a nice touch that we are used to having in Australia. The chapel next door was a great place to celebrate Mass. The courtyard and the rooftop were places with a good atmosphere in which to enjoy a drink before dinner.

This hotel was undoubtedly the best we have stayed at in Europe. The rooms are modern, spacious and bright, with little touches (like tea making facilities) that make for real comfort, especially in that hour when you have just arrived after a long day’s travel, and have no wish to go looking for a simple tea or coffee before starting the search for somewhere to dine. But the Domus has that problem covered as well, for on the sunny roof terrace there is a high quality restaurant with excellent meals at very reasonable prices. They had no problem at all with my coeliac condition, with good gluten free rolls at breakfast. And when we left early in the morning, they packed us a very nice breakfast. The staff could not have been more helpful.
One other major plus for the traveller is a guest laundry with washers and dryers all in working order.
Our overall impression was one of peacefulness and quiet, whether in the rooms or in the cloistered courtyard. This is a 4 star hotel that really deserves to be a 5 star.
