Whilst a centrally located hotel it lacks service and integrity ,they were of no help or sympathetic as we were robbed whist our stay at this hotel under very suspious circumstances ,the room could be entered by a easy push of the door ,and was done so..
When confronting staff to this matter sympathy or help was not adequitly required .

As most reviewers have commented, location is top drawer, the staff are very good and friendly and the roof top terrace is just great. Room would be large for a double, but as we were 3, a smaller single bed was inserted making one side with just a legs width to get in and out of, not great, but no biggy either. Room and Bathroom kept very clean, Breakfast on the Roof Terrace is a terrific way to start the day, food ok but plentiful, could do with more fresh fruit, fresh water melon available but tinned peaches and prunes, not really acceptable. In terms of downsides, all the carpets in the corridors on all floors were grubby, hire a carpet extraction cleaner now and again for pity sake. It really lets the quality of the hotel down. Wifi is like returning to the dial up days of the nineties, our room at the end of the corridor at the back of the hotel had no signal, roof terrace no signal, even in reception it was still poor and at €7 per 24hrs, frankly appalling. All in all, a very good hotel, who if they sorted out a few very simple things could be great. They only have to walk across the Piazza to the Nazionale to see how they can do it (see march 2012 review, why did I not stay at Nazionale this trip, was looking for hotel with roof terrace, simple) BTW the air conditioning only comes on if you keep the window closed, took us a little while to figure out as no instructions in the room, but it does work grand.

Room Tip: try for a Piazza view.

Great location. Nice helpful staff. Let down by litany of easily dealt with factors.

The grubby state of carpet on the stairs and in the corridors on the way to the second floor was not a good greeting.

The bed was hard and lumpy. I can sleep anywhere, but my wife really struggled with this and could not wait to get home.

The additional 7 euro per day for the internet seemed tacky for a service that was flaky, slow and needed repeated sign-on with non memorable ids and password.

An aircon system that only operated on the full, noisy, fan setting and had a minimum temperature setting of 19 and a maximum of 22 meant manual switching on and off during the night.

Only two English channels on the TV was a surprise in such an international and multi cultural city.

The lack of a shelf or tray in the shower for soap and shampoo meant juggling or bending to the floor.

The nice breakfast terrace on the roof was let down by a lack lustre and unappealing buffet spread that included no fresh fruit, limited bread options, only one heated option of rubbery scrambled eggs, tepid "hot water" for the tea in a coffee filter jug on the coffee warmer and tasteless filter coffee.

All above easily addressable by a so called four star hotel part of the ITI group.

Not so easy to address was the room layout we experienced, whereby next door's en-suite bathroom protruded into our room behind a thin wall behind our bed. Listening to the tinkle of water hitting a basin in the late evening felt very unsettling.

We wondered if the manager had ever stayed in the rooms.

This hotel is definitely on our avoid list for the future.

The location is brilliant! We were right across from the Parliament Building, 5 mins (not even) walk from the Trevi fountain, 5 mins walk from the Pantheon, and 10 minutes walk from the Vittorio Emmanuel Monument. It really was the prefect location, and was quite safe as there was always loads of carabinieri out the front being that it was in the same square as Parliament.
They could be a little noisy however, as they were there all through the night, but the window shutters closed out most of the noise so we didnt have any complaints.

The staff were always helpful to us, and gave us a great authentic Italian Restaurant recommendation nearby.
Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was good- there wasnt a huge selection for food, but it suited us quite well, and the view was simply gorgeous overlooking the city. It was very romantic!

The room we stayed in was absolutely massive, and the toilet & bathroom were separated from the bedroom by a second door, which meant that if one of us wanted to sleep in a little, we couldnt hear the other using the bathroom! Brilliant!
The bed was comfortable and we were able to sleep very well.

We would recommend this hotel, especially for people who want to be right in the heart of Rome, and close to all of the action!

As with most three star places they are old and quite limited in what they can deliver. So taking all this into account the Colanna proved good value. Excellent location, lovely breakfast on a quaint top floor, rooms clean and service OK although staff were quite gruff - not rude ! We are writing this review with the recent benefit of staying in numerous hotels in Europe over the last few weeks. On the down side elevators are very small and very very slow. A stay here would be dependent on price and where it fits within your budget.
