Having stayed in Rome for both business and pleasure on several occasions previously, I was aware of the extremely variable standard of hotel accommodation, regardless of star rating. As a consequence, I invested considerably more time in my selection than normal for a 3 night stay just before Easter, considering many of the established hotels, such as the Hassler, Eden, and Sofitel before eventually settling on the HSR.
That additional research was time well spent, in light of the combination of excellent location (5 minutes walk downhill to the top of the Spanish Steps) and good service and overall quality of the hotel. This was illustrated by an extremely helpful reception and concierge (who booked tickets for us for the Vatican Museum (saving an enormous amount of queuing time) as well as 2 very good restaurants, in particular Ad Hoc on Via di Ripetta), and a welcoming bottle of chilled champagne in our room upon arrival.
Perhaps the only negatives were the somewhat stoney faced waiting staff at breakfast (but always polite) and the very average coffee in a city that knows and appreciates good coffee. But if that is all I have to ‘complain’ about then I am scraping the barrel, as it had no impact on a most positive experience. Well done HSR and thank you.
