“Great Choice of Hotel Away From City Centre”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

A friend and I booked this last min and got a very good rate for our three night stay. I can fully endorse all the positive comments previous contributors have made; pleasant, helpful staff, tasteful/clean rooms, good breakfast. Nice toiletries and robes/slippers in room. Good, powerful shower and lovely deep bath.
We chose this hotel knowing that it was a bit out of the centre as we felt it may have been nice to return to a quieter neighbourhood at night. We both agreed that this was a good decision. We would have paid much more for a three star with dubious reviews in a more central location.
Some people may be put off by the location of this hotel. I would urge you to think again; you're probably going to be in Rome for 3 or 4 days and will want to pack in all the highlights. No matter where you are, you're going to have to travel a bit to get back to your hotel. The pre-book able minibus leaves you at Polpolo Square and from there you can navigate your way round the city very easily. We never used the minibus to return to the hotel as a taxi was only €8-10 depending on where we were picked up. You will walk so much in Rome you will be relieved to jump into a taxi to your hotel rather than have to find public transport at the end of an exhausting day!
We ate at a very good local restaurant just 5 mins walk away (the was another, quieter restaurant even closer). One evening I had the lobster pasta special and was delighted and surprised to be served with half a lobster and just about the best spaghetti I've ever tasted ( for €18). We also ate in the hotel one night and the food was good although the restaurant was very quiet. Other diners were business guests dining alone.

The public rooms at The Duke are very beautiful and you have a real sense of being in an Italian hotel rather than an anonymous hotel in any city.

One piece of advice re airport taxis: taxis which are licenced by City of Rome can only charge you €48 from the airport to your hotel (and back) as long as the hotel falls within the city walls. The Duke does not fall within the city walls. We pre-booked a limo service from the airport which only cost €40. Best airport limo service I've ever used. We left it too late to book for the return journey and had to use a standard taxi which cost €90 (yes!), mainly due to slow moving traffic all the way to the airport. Lesson - book return limo service as, at this price, it's a real bargain.

Oh yes! The All Blacks stayed here, which impressed our husbands and kids (whom we had left behind at home to enjoy the fabulous English, half term weather!)

Booked this hotel via a groupon offer but still paid over £300 for 3 nights, it's advertised as a city centre hotel with access to a free pool both of which aren't true.
The hotel is a bit out of the centre but the hotel does provide a 7 seater shuttle to the centre however you have to pre book this which makes you constantly looking at your watch and doesn't give you the freedom that you'd like. We went during a quiet period so I can see this shuttle being difficult to access during peak times.
The website states access to a free pool a short walk away this is in fact not free and should you wish to use the pool at the gym resort it costs you 28 euro's, safe to say that my swimming costume was not used !
Staff very nice however we found ourselves constantly asking staff for information as this was not given freely. Rooms have sky however we only had 3 English speaking channels. The hotel also has conferences so for a few days we could not use the lounge area so you could only go to your room at night. Hotel in a residential area with a small nice restaurant around the corner, also balcony's over looked and we got woken up every morning by the delivery outside our room. Rooms are stated as sound proof, again this is not true as could hear other people within the hotel.
Hotel room was nice however I think you could get just as nice of a hotel at a similar price in the centre. Wouldn't stay again.

Not far from the center of Rome, you will find this charming hotel in a quiet, residential area. Easy and quick access to and from Piazza Popolo via their shuttle. Nice rooms that have been updated but still have some old world charm. Our room had a large balcony that was perfect for watching the sunset!

Before I start I must let you know that our stay at The Duke was a gift from somebody so I can’t comment on the value for money of this place for obvious reasons.

We spent 3 night s here at the end of our holiday and we were impressed with the look of the place. We had a lovely room which I think was a deluxe or something as it had a sofa, desk and huge bathroom.

Check-in was very efficient. We found that during our stay most of the reception staff were very friendly but one, not so much. They were all very professional though so no real reason for complaint or anything.

The shuttle bus is a great idea but we didn’t think it was very well executed with over bookings and the return car leaving a little early so we just say it drive away as we walked towards it! We may just have been unlucky and it is still a good service to offer.

The hotel is a little away from the main sights but we have stayed in Rome before so it was nice to see a different area. With the shuttle bus too, I don’t think you really miss out by being here rather than in the centre. In fact, we found our favourite restaurant of the trip just round the corner so that was a bonus!

We had dinner one night in the hotel and it was very nice food. It was late so we didn’t have multiple courses or anything but the meat dish my husband had and my pasta dish were both delicious. The wine was also very good. It wasn’t cheap but it wasn’t overly expensive either. If we weren’t in Rome and surrounded by amazing places to eat we would have happily eaten here again.

Breakfast was very good with a large variety of options available included in the room rate.

The room was very clean, the bed comfy, the wifi free and all in all we really enjoyed it! I imagine that it would be out of our price range to stay again but I certainly wouldn’t say no if it was an option.

We had a deluxe room which was very nice, the bar was not available during our stay as they had a conference in the room.
The breakfast was typical continental with cereals and fruit etc, the sausage and bacon were not very appetising to look at so never tasted them.
If you look up the hill from the entrance about 50m there is a little supermarket that do a very nice red wine for 3 euro for a litre bottle - very nice too ( very small bottle in hotel were 4.5 euros.)

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room that was spacious with a balcony this was nice, front facing with lots of room.

We stayed with our two children for two nights and booked a single room (a late booking). Normally, we'd expect it to be a little cramped, but we were provided with a corner suite which was spacious and well appointed. We also had a balcony which was great.

Bathroom was very good, our experience of Italian bathrooms hasn't been brilliant - most are too small.

breakfast is served in a smallish room and is self service - a good selection ad the friendly staff will bring espressos etc as required.

Overall, staff were very helpful and attentive. The free shuttle to the centre is good and almost essential given that the hotel is located slightly off the beaten track (though in a quiet area as a result).

We'd certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Get a suite - a bit more expensive, but some have balconies

We stayed at The Duke Hotel in Rome for a three day weekend. Hotel Stars in Italy are very often difficult to understand by the well traveled person I think I am ... But the Duke is a 4 star hotel. The staff is welcoming and helpful. The room we had (412) was cosy (though a big person could have a little difficulty in the beautifully tiled bathroom). Breakfast is brunch styled, with prosecco, pastries, cold cuts, cheese and the rest.
Now, here is for the "but", which I think explains the rates of this hotel, which are lower than other 4 star hotels in Rome: location! The hotel is in a (very nice) residential area, North of Villa Borghese.
Forget about public transportation! I took the metro out of Central Station, and the a train, it took a looong time, and upon arriving at Euclide train station, we had to walk slightly uphill for 15 minutes.
However, it must be said thatvthe hotel provides a shuttle service that takes you in 10 minutes acrosss the green park of Villa Borghèse to one of its gates, next to Fumino metro station, and Piazza del Popolo. From there, buses and metro are available.
Overall, we had a nice stay, the hotel is quiet (remember, it is in a sidentia area), clean, cosy, and welcoming..
