“Beautiful Hotel Matched by Outstanding Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2011

The hotel is beautifully appointed and the rooms are large, clean and modern. The hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood and offers a shuttle service to/from the Piazza del Popolo every 30 minutes. The Manager, Massimo, was extremely friendly and helpful. He went the extra mile, above and beyond the call of duty, to do whatever was necessary to make our stay pleasant and enjoyable. The breakfast buffet is quite substantial and offers a lot of variety. Food prices are relatively inexpensive in the hotel restaurant and the quality of the food was outstanding. I highly recommend The Duke Hotel and would give it 5 stars for overall quality and service.

This hotel is located north of the city center in a very quiet residential district with hardly any bars, restaurants or shops. This is in itself would not be a problem but the hotel itself does not have a bar or restaurant. It does however, provide a good buffet breakfast and extensive room service. The rooms are pleasantly decorated but with barely any noise insulation. There was a vent in the room which seemed to have water leaking into it and sounded like rain on a tin roof at times. At other times the wind howled through it. A group returning late congregated in the room next to ours and made a huge amount of noise until the early hours - presumably they had nowhere else to go because the hotel has no bar and there is nowhere to go within walking distance of the hotel. The Sky TV had only one foreign channel working at the time we visited - BBC world. This hotel would be fine for someone visiting friends or relatives in the area but as a tourist it is not worth the detour to the suburbs.

Dear cside2b,
thank you for sharing your thoughts about your journey to Rome and I’m really sorry to hear that wasn’t as good as you expected. First of all I would like to apologize for the noise made by your “Room neighbours”; regarding the Vent problem if we knew about this problem during you’re stay we’ve have been more than happy to solve this matter as quick and as good as possible. Regarding the English speaking channels the hotel provides to our guests other than the standard Cnn and Bbc news channels we do also have Sky Cinema that plays only original speaking language movies 7 days a week. Regarding our food and bevarege services I’m glad to inform you and the future guests of the hotel that we do have both bar and restaurant services. Our Restaurant “I Duchi” where thanks to our Chef Luca Pavia you will be able to taste the best traditional cuisine with particular attention to regional menu. Our Bar services are located in our Polo Lounge, with a full service from espresso coffe and soft drinks to wine or liquors of any sort (more than 40 brands). We do thank you once more to give us the opportunity to improve our service to our guests and we’ll be very happy to welcome you once more here in Rome at the Duke hotel.

The Duke Hotel has a magnificent looking website. Unfortunately, the reality doesn't come close. Located in a residential neighborhood north of the city center, north of the Borghese Gardens, north of everything(!)...no cafes nearby, no shops, not even good walking. The hotel itself has no restaurant (save a b'fast buffet set up daily in an interior, drab room), no bar -- unless your group pays for a bartender in the mis-named Polo Lounge -- no cafe or espresso stand, no shop. Rooms are tired and small w/ cheap linens, a broken vanity mirror in my bathroom, barely-there shower, Sky TV doesn't work well enough to get any of the non-Italian speaking stations. Nice enough staff and they try to be accommodating. There is a free shuttle to the city center.

Dearest annstead,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the tripadvisor comunity even if the feedback isn’t this positive. Let me start with my apologies regarding the problems you found in your room, I’m sure that if you have explained those problems to our front desk staff , we surely have provided a prompt solutions. Regarding the English speaking channels the hotel provides to our guests other than the standard Cnn and Bbc news channels we do also have Sky Cinema that plays only original speaking language movies 7 days a week. Let me continue saying that the hotel has both a bar and a restaurant aswell, even if there aren’t coffee machine in our Polo lounge you can get anything you want from espresso coffee to our huge varity of liquors (more than 40 brands) or any soft drink you may request. We choose to set our polo lounge not as a “regoular” Bar just because the aim is to make the client feel like home in a cozy and warm atmosphere. Yes we are not in the city center but is written everywhere even in our official website. The hotel is located in the most luxurious district of Rome called Parioli, only 10 minutes walk to villa Borghese. Our district is full of bars and restaurants 5 minutes walk from the hotel. As you correctly underlined we do also offer in a complimentary basis a shuttle that In five minutes take our guests to Piazza del Popolo from 8:00 am until 11 pm. We do thank you once more cause even bad reviews are a chance for us to improve our service to our guests. Warm regards

We stayed here for our 38th Wedding Anniversary and it was perfect. Don't worry about being away from the center of the city. It's a short walk to the bus or train and a Roma Card gets you anywhere you want to go, subway, train or bus. They made reservations for us to see the Borgese Gallery which was Free with the Roma Card. It should not be missed! Take the train from Euclide to Flaminio, 5 minutes. Eat at Carrots in Euclide, you will love it and it's young crowd. A short walk to the hotel through quiet and safe neighborhood. The hotel includes breakfast buffet that blows away Hampden Inn or other motel breakfasts in the states. Juices, Coffee, Tea, Fresh Fruits, Eggs, Bacon, Sausages, Yogurts, incredible pastries and even sparkling wine for mimosas. You cannot go wrong at this Hotel....big clean rooms, quiet and modern.

I can fully recommend the place.Very quiet area ,rooms designed with good taste, nice breakfast, very kind service..

The only thing which was quite difficult was the fact it s so far from the centre ,however the Duke has free shuttle bus so if you r lucky and reserve it you can get to the town without any effort..

I bought internet using the internet site and it was quite expensive but my friends were smart enough :) and discovered it is much more cheaper when you are paying for it at the front desk

The Duke Hotel was a nice European hotel. The rooms were clean and well kept, bathrooms although small were updated and well appointed. Each morning we had a breakfast with a nice assortment of foods no matter what time you arrived, early or late.
Although we knew the hotell was in a residential area, it was farther than we expected. Definately not walking distance to anything. Athough it took only minutes for a cab to arrive, the drivers would take us on different routes every day and the same destination would cost anywhere from 5-25 Euros! We looked at it as a sighseeing opportunity each time because our Italian was too limited to discuss the route.
The staff was attentive but not overly friendly (with the exception of Massimo and Allesandro who were both wonderful). I thnk they tended to shy away from guests who did not speak fluent Italian as their English was liimited.
Last point to make was it was incredibly quiet at night! You could hear a pin drop the neighborhood was so quiet. One of our cab drivers said it was like the Upper East side of Manhattan as far as neighborhoods go - lots of professionals lived in the area.
We travel extensively and prefer to stay at smaller boutique hotels. Although it was not a disapointment, we probably would not stay at the Duke again when we return to Rome simply because of its location.

Stayed for 2 nights the roomes are clean AC could be a bit better. The hotel is in the suburbs of Rome but once you get your bearings the local underground is close and the trains are cheap and have good AC you are about 20mins by train from the Colosseum. The hotel has its own shuttle bus to the spanish steps which we used. BEWARE ROME CAB DRIVERS they will con you, they tried it on with me saying that i had given them a 5 Euro note instead of the 20 i had given he did this while i was dealing with the luggage at the hotel and busy it is easy to get taken in by this you have been warned, lots of travel guides will also warn you DON'T TRUST THEM. Overall the hotel was good and the breakfast satisfactory.
