The restaurant we intended to visit was closed, so we had to find something to eat on the hoof, so to speak. We had noticed it on the way into the centre in the morning, so thought we'd give it a try. Glad we did!

Its downstairs below a hotel, but not obviously connected to it.

Had more locals in than tourists, but was very friendly.

The patron didn't seem to know what was on "the daily specials" part of the menu, nor did it appear that his eyesight was that good. However, after questioning the menu with his staff, he gave our selections his approval, and we were treated to great inexpensive food.

At the end of the meal he gave us a choice of a free liqueur, and when he realised one of our party didn't drink, he went a got a clear spirit claiming, with a sly grin, it to be "minerlai". Reads really cheesy, but was very funny at the time.

We found this restaurant on our way to the Barberini fountain (which unfortunately turned out to be closed for restauration when we finally got to it). It was late so we ordered just the house selection of antipasti to share among us three, and then one main dish for each, plus some veggies and potatoe sides. The antipasti were actually filled the top of a rolling (service) table entirely, about a dozen good-sized portions. We were sure the waiter had misunderstood us and thought we ordered antipasti for each, rather than for sharing, but he assured us that this was one serving only. They were all very tasty but we did not finish them in expectation of our main courses. They were very good, too but there was no way we could finish them.

We had a bottle of house red which was not spectacular but certainly palatable. At the end of the meal we also received a free digestif which was good.

There were not many guests this late in the evening (we left 11.30pm) and there was a real family feeling, with the very cute little daughter of the house (age 4?) coming to our table and playing with us. She was under close supervision by Mama who made sure she was not getting out of bounds.

The bill was very reasonable (under 90.- for three).

A very nice dinner experience. Would not hesitate to go back.

We stumbled upon the Taverna Barbarini on our way back from a night visit to the Trevi Fountain. Everyone was tired and hungry. The Taverna Barbarini has the feel of a restaurant the locals might choose instead of some place that caters to tourists. The food was very good but nothing fancy. I came to learn that the "Ialian food" we often get in America is a far cry from what you eat in Italy. Fresh ingredients and simple preparations beat the over processed food we get here any time.
Service was a little slow by US standards but relax, you are in Rome. Have another glass of wine and reflect of what you have seen that day.
Wine selections were very good.

We discovered this place thanks to our guest house next door. We went there on different evenings and we were very satisfied at each visit. Friendly owners, and excellent cuisine, nice surprise very good rosé wine, little free extras offered. All in all an excellent experience at affordable prices.
