This is one of the most amazing structures to go and see and it totally blows your mind thinking about the history behind it. Our guide for the tour (Barbara) was really good and helped us piece it all together. I would really recommend getting your tickets early as we got there about 9am and didn't wait more than 10 mins but when we came back for the tour at 12 there was over an hours queue. Also pay the little bit extra for a tour of the underground section and the top level. It was amazing!

We had a tour booked by Viatour using their Rome tours, Dark Rome. We had a fantastic guide, Chiara, who was obviously interested and knowledgeable about the Colosseum and Forum.
It's hard to imagine the age of it all when you think that the US is only about 240 years old. Fasinating!

How can you not love the history behind the Colosseum. The guide made it even more interesting with little know facts and pointing out what was there before it was built.

Visited on a Saturday early afternoon so I was worried that the queue would be huge. It turned out that it wasn't too bad (maybe about 20mins to get to the ticket booths). Definately pay the extra few euro and get a guided tour from the booth. You get access to the reconstructed arena floor section, the underground section and the top tier sections. The tour lasts around 2 hours and really helps to bring the history of the place to life and clears up some common misconceptions introduced through Hollywood etc. I usually dont bother with tours but this one was totally worth the extra few euro!

The guides for groups, for a fraction of the Hotel cost you get basically the same tour: the Colosseum and the Forum. Lot's of walking at the Forum. Concise info given. Time a little tight, but then, you will need more than a month if you truly want to see it all !
