“Does not live up to it's own press”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Nice building, large airy rooms that could have been filled with art....hmmmm.

Ok got there just off the Borghesse Park, that is fantastic by the way, no line ups (wondered about that), the travel books all said that this museum was FREE, not likely, and it was not free. When we were in the lobby there was more than one person in a heated argument about the fact that it was not free. We paid and went in to find the Monet's etc... that were in the pamphlets that the museum promoted. Very disappointed.

Time to spend in this museum, 30 minutes and you could do it twice. The positives, 40 degrees in the sun outside, so the air conditioning was a welcome relief, so money well spent.

“Excellent museum, spent a whole 6h there without being bored!”
Reviewed December 18, 2012 via mobile

It was the highligt of our trip, much to our own surprise. While we expected the standard national gallery stuff, this one is very well curated and keeps you engaged all way through. We saw a lot of children enjoying themselves, as the works of modern and contemporary artists are merged and keep grabbing your attention. We planned to stay 2h max, but it became 6h! Also, at this time of the year, it was basically empty, a very nice experience in busy Rome. Much recommended!

“Great World Class Museum”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

This is a great museum! It deserves more attention than it appears to get.

I'm not only a museum junkie; I volunteer hundreds of hours in the second largest museum in the US. So I've seen a lot of museums around the world and the National Gallery of Modern Art is world class. You can stand in the galleries and feel like you are at MOMA or the Tate Modern. (I guess some people interpret the museum’s collection of art from the 1800s to be its main collection. I took that wing of the building to be like every other fine art museum that has pieces that fall outside of their time frame specialty: they sort of just ignore the mismatch.)

The museum is in Borghese Park. It is an easy walk from the Flaminio metro station and there is a tram that passes by also. (See the museum’s website for transportation options.)

I highly recommend it on its own and to also provide a break from all of the historical sites.

“Large, airy, no advance booking!!!”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

Museum was really good and we did not have to book in advance like many of the other museums with their barrage of tour touts. The contents are great but the fountain in the middle of the left hand side is amazing with it's humorous characters and banana palms overgrowing the area.
The museum is a journey through art and not just contemporary modern art. It has many amazing pictures and sculptures that are well worth seeing. The walk back through the park is also nice especially in Autumn when we were there.

“Quite and interesting”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

The National gallery is located in a beautiful district of Rome. Its situated in a park, which helps to take away from the busy hustle and bustle of city life and other tourists.

The art gallery itself holds a lot of art that is very different from the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums, the art is predominately water colours and oil paintings. If you're a big lover of art, here they hold some Van Gough, Jackson Pollac and Rossetti.

If you do go to the art gallery there is a great park nearby, be sure to visit the lake/pond where you can row up to a temple in little row boats.
