My wife and i stayed in Rome as part of my 40th birthday celebrations. We stayed on the Aventine Hill for a few days then moved to this hotel for the final day purely as an additional extra cheaper hotel stay to our visit, the first hotel having been fairly expensive. The Columbus Hotel is a very grand building with nice public areas with the breakfast serving area being particularly nice and you can sit outside on the terrace to eat although i did feel the choice of food was quite poor compared to our first hotel. We had booked quite a cheap room and it was consistent with the price being a little dated albeit clean. You get what you pay for so i have no complaints there although the air-conditioning was a mobile unit and was a little noisy and not very effective. We found the staff to be very helpful. The real selling point of this hotel, and why we chose it, is that it is situated on the main street approaching Saint Peters and so there and the museum are only a short walk away.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for. You can ask for a room facing the garden as we did (we didn't get one...

If you want a fancy hotel, stay somewhere else!
The hotel is pretty basic, old but clean, elevator is small and never on the floor you need, but the stairs work well! The people on the front desk were always friendly. The wi-fi does not really work in the room, works better if you hang out of the window at the front of the hotel, however, it works great in the wi-fi area downstairs and in the bar. The food in the restaurant was amazing. So if you want to be close to the Vatican and are not looking for a really fancy hotel this is it.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the garden, so it was quiet I should imagine it would be noisy at the front, but...

This has got to be one of the best locations in Rome, just 200 yards from St. Peter's Basilica yet within easy walking distance from so many of Rome's popular tourist attractions. My wife described the hotel as 'Shabby Chic' in the nicest way; a former cardinal's palace with murals and interesting decor in abundance. The welcome we received from the staff on reception on each and every occasion that we either left or returned to the hotel was so warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouible for them.

Room Tip: We have stayed twice in different rooms with no problems, but I'm not sure that all have showers...

We love the history, art and location of this wonderful place. Very happy with the accommodations and service. I had no problem with the WiFi on our room, perhaps because it was on the top floor. The breakfast was acceptable but not great. If you are looking for modern accommodations, then this is not the place for you.

Decent breakfast with meats and cheeses, fresh fruit, choice of juices, hard boiled eggs, and pastries. Breakfast area was large and had both indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly and helpful staff. Free wifi. Typical European hotel room. CON: If you are traveling during summer months, be aware that the air conditioning is ONLY ON FROM noon-4PM and 7PM-5AM. The front desk claimed this was so the staff could clean the rooms in the morning, and most people aren't in their rooms in the late after noon. The mornings would heat up fairly fast, and would wake us up by 7ish.

My friends and I just returned from Italy. We booked this hotel for 8 nights because of its proximity to St Peter' Basilica. I loved the old building right away ( some off my friends complained that it was too spartan, basic furnishings, small shower, poor wifi reception, the elevator too small and could only accommodate 3 people at one time). The hotel was just within a block from St Peter's Square. It was easy to get in and out, safe to stay out until late, close to all the small shops, restaurants, the Vatican museum, hop-on hop-off buses. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly (some of my friends thought the desk clerks were aloof and snotty!). But really, I found the staff pleasant and helpful, we easily ironed out the little problem of "overbooking", I would attribute this to language barrier. The staff was helpful with giving us directions to some attractions, called taxis and vans for us as needed. The ancient halls echoed with our footsteps and voices. This used to be a a palace and lodging for pilgrims and cardinals in Rome. Pricey but we are paying for location here. Will definitely go back if I can afford another visit to the Eternal City!

Room Tip: We paid for a triple room but got a double room instead. We did not complain anymore since there wer...

We stayed here for two nights on two separate occasions. Very friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms. The WiFi in the rooms was terrible, but this old building has seriously thick stone walls. If you venture down to the common rooms, it's better. The beds also weren't the most comfortable, not bad, but I wouldn't recommend them if you have back problems. That being said, you can't beat the location. Step out the door and you're at the Vatican!

Room Tip: Ask for a recently renovated room. We have one room with a TV from the 80's, and a bed to match.
