“Great location - teensy room!”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

The good news - this hotel is 100 metres from the Vatican and the common areas are quite regal. Great restaurant serving gourmet fare!
The bad news - my room was like a monks room - very small, and sparse, lacking any charm - certainly unlike the august common areas of the hotel

Room Tip: Even if you are a single traveller, book a double room - it's worth the extra price.

Arrive to Rome Int. Airport. Took the train to the Termini, took the Metro to one of the stations close to the Vatican, and arrive extremely tired.
Great surprise on the location of the hotel, better than I thought, great rooms, great service.
Will be back soon

I was very pleased with the Columbus. Although our double room was small, the twin room we had booked for our nieces was very large. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, even to the point of looking up directions to a restaurant to which they were unaware. I would use the Columbus again, especially for anyone wanting to be close to the Vatican. It's right outside the front door!

Myself and my wife stayed at this hotel for four nights to celebrate our thirty-fifth wedding Anniversary, we'd stayed there five years ago for the same reason and at that time wew were very pleased with the accommodation.
The hotel is a former Cardinals Palace dating back to the 1490's, it is undoubtably a building of real character with what appera to be genuinally old paintings and antique furniture. It is just a block down from St. Peter's Square with tourist buses stopping across the road. The hotel is at the extreme end of the tourist circuit, the opposite end being the railway station. It's a 45 minute walk to the Trvi Fountain or around 10euros by taxi.
Unfortunately the last five years have taken their toll and the room that we had looked rather shabby. It was furnished with a six foot wide bed, a wardrobe with only eight hangers and one usable draw. A relatively small CRT television, bedside cabinets, a wooden upright chair and an easy chair with splits in fabric and broken springs. The shower room had broken tiles and the acrylic shower screen went across a window.
Although the hotel is served by wi-fi there is a charge of 3 euros an hour or 15 euros a day. Expensive given that wi-fi at Macdonalds and even the Hard Rock Cafe is free.
I didn't dine at the restaurant other than to have breakfast, the food was adequate including boiled eggs, processed cheese, processed ham, cereals and tinned fruit.
Overall the staff were helpful although phone calls down to reception to arange an alarm call didn't get answered, this was after after ten o'clock at night.
There is a single lift/elevator with a capacity for four people or two people and cases we didn't have any problems but the condition of the rooms didn't instill confidence in it's maintenance.
This hotel needs refurbishing, I couldn't recommend it to others except for a one night experience of being in a former palace.

A wonderful hotel within steps of the Vatican. There is an interior courtyard for breakfast and dinner (do eat dinner here - it was the best we had in Rome). We stayed in the Apartment and it was very nice, two rooms and a bath. A few down sides - The shower was difficult to manage, with no shower curtain and it being hand held. You had to pay extra for WiFi. The rooms were a little hot. Some front desk personel were more helpful than others (apparently there is a bus ticket you can get that lets you use the bus system but we were never told about it) Still, it was a charming oasis in a thriving metropolis.

Hotel was first completed in 1526. I stayed three very hot August nights, but the air conditioning worked GREAT all three days and nights. Hotel has three advantages:
Location, location, location. The front door is about 350 feet from the edge of St. Peter's Square. All of the tour buses stop directly across the street.

Service was generally good. All staff members spoke good English. Internet is for a fee from two computers in the lobby -- one of which did not work two of the days I stayed there.

My room was small, adequate and very overpriced. The bathroom was comical. No bathtub and no shower curtain. Before you take a shower, you have to remove everything from the bathroom that you don't want to get wet. The bathroom reflects the hotel's 16th century history.

All things considered, my stay at the Columbus Hotel was a pleasant experience, but badly overpriced.

Room Tip: Book online with Expedia and pay in advance. Bill will be less painful that way.
