Hotel Columbus

This hotel is on the street with the most beautiful view of St. Peter's Basilica. Rome is fairly spead out, so it is tough to choose a central location, but Hotel Columbus has access to all the buses. It is an older builiding and seems to attract a lot of priests and nuns who are not staying in Vatican City. The rooms were TINY, the bathroom was smaller than I knew was possible, and the air conditioning didn't work very well. However, the courtyard is AMAZING. The servers bring out yummy (and free) little trays of appertivos with any drinks. Hotels in Rome can be more expensive, and this probably worked out well compared to other hotels for the price.

This hotel is authentic and has good character about it...the rooms were comfortable and airy with old style furniture. My only gripe would be the size of the shower cubilcle.
The dining room was beautiful and the food was great...all the staff that we met were courteous and polite.
The hotel is a great base for the Vatican as it is less that 500 yards to St Peters Square and is in easy walking distance of about 15/20 mins away from some of the other historic attractions.
The area where the hotel is on is very quiet at night which was nice in a bustling city like Rome not too much traffic outside the hotel at night.

Ok. The building is old, but nice. The restaurant is great. But, the rooms are Spartan and the beds and televisions (and showers) are old and were a real disappointment. My wife and I had real difficulty sleeping because the beds sunk to the middle- like we were in the middle of a sandwich. It has been a long time since we have seen a tube tele and 80's style remotes. This is a 2 star hotel and yet they could do so much more. As for the price, I have spent more in Paris and London and had much, much better. A little investment would go a long way, but it seems the owners are trying to squeeze as much as they can.

The only bright side is the restaurant, which has a great wine list.

The Columbus Hotel situated 100 mtrs from the Vatican. so close in fact that the restaurant of the hotel was once used as the refectory in which the Pope took meals!. (check out the frescos). As I only required a single room the room I was allocated was exactly that! A single bed had been shoe horned into the room which had a tiny window looking onto a side street (so no views)...this really was a priests cell! and very basic. The only sound which could be heard from the outside was of singing pilgrims. The larger rooms of the hotel have better views and are a lot less basic, and a lot more expensive.! Dinner in the hotel restaurant is a must, excellent food and surroundings.
If your main reason to be in Rome is to spend a lot of time in and near the Vatican this is the place for you. The Parthenon and other Rome sites are within easy walking distance.

The hotel is a 15th century palazzo located 500 feet from the plaza in front of St Peters! The noise and bustle of the street stops at the hotel's doors and once inside you get a glimpse at medieval princely lodgings: hugely tall, painted-ceilinged halls, thick walls, huge leaded windows and castlelike drapery. The rooms range from smaller at the 4th floor to really large at the lower floors, but all well appointed. Bathroom facilities are mostly updated but even those that keep the flair of time passed are in very good working order and very comfortable. The staff is very courteous and friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The reception staff distinguish themselves by speaking very well several European languages and take the trouble to know their customers by name. The restaurant is in a museum quality room all frescoed and high; one wouldn't be surprised to see Romeo and Juliet walk in, or a knight in armor! Service is very pleasant and understated, food is sophisticated 21st century elegant fare, the same about the wine list.

Expectations of the Columbus were mixed. Good reviews appear here on TripAdvisor, but a low price combined with a central Rome location with parking rang alarm bells. My concern was totally misplaced, as the Columbus is a truly fantastic hotel.

Literally a stones throw from Vatican City, the location couldn't be better for visitors there. For the rest of Rome, it meant a short walk, but Castel Sant'Angelo is just a couple of minutes walk, while Piazza Navona is around 15 minutes. Even the Colosseum is walkable, taking a leisurely 40 minutes to get to. However, given the hotels position, right on the approach to the Vatican, taxis are plentiful.

The hotel itself has a small car park, through a narrow gate, which is unusual in Rome. The building itself is unremarkable although pleasant, but once you get inside it's fantastic!

A large reception area with stone floors, high ceilings and endless old artworks on the wall greets you. This theme is continued throughout the hotel, with random lounges, reception rooms, seating areas and more, all very grand. There's even a grand piano lurking in one room, perfectly tuned. A spacious bar, with Wi-Fi, and a classy restaurant are available too, with the latter serving some fantastic, if pricey, food.

The room was very spacious, although somewhat basic. That said, it fitted the style of the hotel perfectly, where a modern identikit hotel room would have felt out of place. A large bed, plenty of floor space, a desk and a TV balanced on top of a mini-bar made up the room, while the bathroom had a good, powerful shower and again, plenty of space. Air conditioning was available, but some vented window shutters proved more pleasant, allowing you to keep the fierce summer sun out during the day, but allowing fresh air in.

In a world of identical chain hotels, the Columbus somehow felt 'real'. When we'd got back each day from exploring Rome, we still felt like we were in Rome, not a faceless hotel. Given that, most flaws could have been overlooked, and possibly were, because as far as we were concerned the hotel was as near perfect as you could get.

Brilliant.

Me and my wife stayed at the Columbus in the Carnival weekend betwen the 5 and 8 of March and find the Hotel quite unique. For an old 15th century monk convent we find everything quite excellent. The room for us was the number 340 facing the yard. A very quiet room that provide us 3 very good sleeping nights with an excellent bathroom with hot, hot water an extra, extra large and confort king size bed and hot hot ac. The cleaness of the hotel was excellent with every corner quite, quite clean as our room too, every day. Good breakfast with many options, very very nice staff, specially "Alexandro" the recepcionist. At last, but not least the "terrific" location just outside Vatican city.

Not so good, the quality of furniture, needing to be replace, The super expensive prices at hotel restaurant "La Veranda" ( but still quite gorgeous), an expresso 2,5€!!! And the TV chanells, only ten, and some with very poor quality!

Allthough the very negative comments here in this site, wich almost made us to avoid this Hotel, believe me, one should book this Hotel, because it´s EXCELLENT service So beautifull and TERRIFIC located!!!

Loved the experience! Loved Columbus! Loved Rome!
