Our cruise ship stopped in Civitavecchia for a day. We were traveling with a multigenerational group ranging in age from 6 to 75. For this reason, we opted not to take the cruise ship’s tour of Rome. We thought the private tour would give us more flexibility if the kids got antsy or the seniors needed to slow down. We chose Rome Driving Tours because of the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. Also, after watching their promotional video on their website, our kids had to know “what can you see through the keyhole?" Elena, with whom we corresponded via email, always responded promptly and addressed all our questions/concerns. We were all a little daunted by the prospect of a 10 hour tour including driving 1 hour each way. However, with Max, our driver/guide, we didn’t worry at all about the schedule: he kept us on time, accommodated all the breaks we needed including a leisurely lunch, and showed us the key highlights and even made sure we stopped to look in the keyhole! Our trip included a stop at Vatican City and a 2-hour guided tour. We highly recommend a guide for the Vatican as there is so much to see that it would have been difficult to get through it all on our own in 2hours. It was helpful having someone point out the highlights. It was a whirlwind tour, but we never really felt overly rushed. One of the biggest concerns we all had was whether we would make it back to the ship in time, given how much we were hoping to see and the distance from the port. Thanks to Max, we got back to the boat with lots of time to spare. We would definitely recommend Rome Driving Tours as an alternative to cruise organized tours.
