“Very good hotel near Termini”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

I booked this hotel beacuse it is located near Termini. And i stayed in this hotel for 5 nights. The hotel is located on a busy street (Via Cavour), so some people may be disturbed by noise because when the windows are closed, you can still hear the noise from outside. I personally did not mind. Thing that bothers me, but not so much, is that shower place is very small so you can't turn. And during may stay there were some problems with wifi. On TV, most of programs are Italian, only 2 or 3 are foreign, If someone finds it important during his stay in Rome. Breakfast is good, and staff is very professional and kindly. In overal I am pretty satisfied with satying in this hotel.

This hotel had been recommended by one of the travel agents who helped us plan our trip, so I was expecting a run of the mill hotel with the usual cold reception and mediocre service that was recommended only because it was close to the train station and would provide quick respite after our long train ride. I could not have been more wrong.

When we checked in, Claudio was the manager on duty. He welcomed us warmly and realizing our lack of fluency in Italian, he immediately impressed us with his ease with the English language. He realized we had just finished a long train ride and that we would only be in Rome for the evening before departing for the U.S. the following morning. First Claudio put us in an outstanding room and when I told him we would like a recommendation for a good restaurant close by, he suggested that we come back downstairs after freshening up so he could direct us to one. He directed us to a terrific restaurant a block and a half from the hotel so we could walk. The food was outstanding and the ambience of having dinner in a 2000 year old castle structure topped off the evening. During check-in, Claudio mentioned the breakfast service in the hotel. When we told him we had to catch an early morning cab and would not be able to take advantage of the breakfast, he told us he would have 2 bagged breakfasts prepared and ready for us to pick up at the desk the following morning to take with us in the cab to the airport.

I travel a great deal for business so I stay in a lot of hotels. Many of those are upper tier hotels that tout their service and friendliness. I now know they don't hold a candle to the service provided to us by Claudio, his staff and the Hotel Genova itself. If.....I mean when we return to Rome, we will definitely plan to stay at the Hotel Genova, and hopefully we'll find Claudio on duty.

Without Claudio, I really don't believe we would have been too happy staying at this hotel.

When we first arrived and the bellman brought us to our room we found two twin beds and not the king size bed we had reserved. When we told the bellman we had booked a King size, he asked if we could stay in that room for the night and they would switch it in the morning!

Fortunately, we asked him to call Claudio (he originally greeted us upon arrival) and he switched the room right away, and brought the keys up himself, apologizing profusely. During our entire stay, if there was anything we needed, Claudio took care of us, restaurant recommendations, tour suggestions and bookings, booking our cab for the airport and even calling us the morning of our flight to make sure we were up (we hadn't even booked a wake up call!).

The hotel itself is more on par with a 3.5 star hotel. The outside of the hotel (awnings) are falling apart, the "king" bed is really two double beds - put together with an awkward pad in the middle, very hard mattress, floors in rooms had large scratches and furniture was older. The buffet was not very good (dish titled "scrambled eggs" was hard boiled eggs, breakfast meat was mini hot-dogs?). The hair dryer was no better than having someone blow on your hair. The cable needed to be reset every time you turned on the tv. This hotel is in the center of the city so it is very noisy. On the plus side, the room was clean and the housekeepers did a good job. It seemed like they only had one bartender, so she probably had to work a lot, but she did an excellent job and was always smiling. Aside from her and Claudio, we didn't meet anyone at the hotel who was either helpful or very friendly.

Room Tip: Ask if they have an actual King bed (with quality mattresses) that isn't two twins pushed togeth...

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Genova for 3 nights in early May. I believe the cost for 3 nights was Approx. $750 Canadian which we found to be high for what we were getting. However along our travels throughout Italy we found this hotel to be within industry standard for what it is was, not typically what one would rate a 4 star in America but typically so within European hotels.
The hotel room we stayed in was standard and small with average amenities but you don't spend a lot of time in your room any how. We had 2 single beds which were firm but very comfortable. Our room included a safe, a small fridge and small flat screen TV. The front desk staff was courteous enough assisting us in booking a hop on hop off bus tour which by the way is the best way to see city centre Rome in a short period of time with visits to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountains, and St. Peters Basilica are among a few points of interest .
As mentioned the hotel is located walking distance from the Termini train station and although a little bit noisy this did not bother us at all. In fact we found it to be an extremely convenient location not only to the train station but to many outdoor cafes and restaurants surrounding every street corner near by. The breakfast provided in the designated area was included in the price and was pleasantly arranged providing enough variety and choices to keep your appetite at bay for the better part of the day. Up the street is a beautiful church that is worth a visit (Santa Maria Maggiore).
Would stay at this hotel again especially for location purposes. Many surrounding conveniences.

Few steps from the Termini railway station (central) in Rome, this hotel is located in one of the most trafficky roads in Rome(still the quality of sleep is gourd) and it is "touristic" under every aspect budgeting a four star outfit with a three star cost level. It could be so, and deserve a full "very good" given the generally not very high status of similar hotels in that area. This zone is close to almost everything (in less than two hours you can circle walk to the Coliseum and Foro Romano - Capitol Hill, up to the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna (the spanish steps), Fontana di Trevi, Via del Corso (high-end shopping streets) and back, however not the best frequented area of the town (typical situation close to central stations in large towns). The interiors would need a refresh: common spaces and private rooms/bathrooms are all white walled and time left significant signs on them. Breakfast is average and could definitely be better. A plus the free wi-fi (where most of four starred houses do charge for significant money. Overall it is good touristic or business solution with average quality/price ratio.
Service is ok, kind and prompt.

Room Tip: High floor and a room not facing the main street.

Great location but we were there in early April and the humidity and temperature in Rome was only about 68 degrees (20C). However, the room was so hot due to the heat staying on most all of the time. We had to sleep with our window open, subjected to the 24 hour sounds of a very busy street. Claudio at the front desk was the only high spot during our stay. You could not find a more helpful and caring individual. Very close to the train terminal and all of the major attractions. If not for the heating system, we would highly recomnmend this hotel. Also, we left 3 wake-up calls with the front desk and only Claudio logged it in. The other 2 were somehow "lost".

The breakfast buffet was interesting; we've never had sliced hot dogs as a breakfast meat. Hey, when in Rome.....

Stayed here for five nights in March. Rooms were bigger than I expected after reading reviews of what to expect for European hotels, that said they are smaller than average American rooms. Rooms were very clean, hardwood floors throughout. We had 2 twin beds which were a bit on the hard side but still sleepable. We did ask for more and softer pillows and they were provided. We were on the 3rd floor and did experience some street and train noise even with windows closed. The bathroom was nice except for the very very very small shower cubicle, and I mean very very very small. You could not extend your arms or bend down at all (think smaller than an American Porta Potty). All of the rooms did not have the small shower so if you can try to ask for the larger ones!
Breakfast was decent, plenty of choices. Very delicious filled pastries, fruit, hard boiled eggs, meats, cheese, cereal, yogurt, toast. Coffee and juice were from a machine and somewhat watered down. It definitely provided enough to get your day started.
The one major complaint was that you had to get a code to sign in to the wi-fi and it was only one code per room and you could only use it on one device, So we had 2 people in our room but only one of us could be on the internet at a time. We did manage to get another code when the desk personnel changed shifts but the problem was if you left your device for even several minutes you had to re-sign on every time, very annoying.
The location is great if you plan on using the subway/train systems which is highly recommended as tourist sights are quite a walking distance from the hotel. The Colosseum is closest but still quite a distance to walk. It is only a 5 min walk to the main Rome station, Rome Termini.
There are several good restaurants within walking distance to the hotel. I did not encounter the super friendly service others wrote about, but the hotel staff was courteous enough. They really did not go out of their way to make us feel welcome or offer any tips on the city but they were not rude either. There are maps available at the front desk if you ask.
Having never been to Rome before I am sure there are better places to stay but based on price and location to the Termini, Hotel Genova was not a bad choice and I would stay there again, except I would ask for a room with a bigger shower!!!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a bigger shower and away from the street side.
