“More than fine -- I hope to return!”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

We stayed here one night, having revised our travel plans while in the middle of traveling. Though we wanted to stay at our "usual" hotel (Residenza Canali ai Coronari, around the corner from Genio, albeit in a more secluded, elegant area), where we had stayed for 4 nights the previous week, they had no rooms available. Genio was the only hotel in the area that could accommodate us at the last minute; and we were fortunate to get a room for a good price (quite a bit less than we'd paid at Residenza Canali!)

I was somewhat dreading Genio, as I'd seen it only while waiting for a bus, and it is in a busy-ish area, looks rather generic from the outside, etc. However, I was delightfully surprised. The room was spacious, spotless, and not without character. The hotel is very pleasantly decorated, despite its not being "trendy" or particularly unique.

Best of all was the terrace, which we visited for the first time very late in the evening upon our arrival: what a VIEW of Rome! Having just climbed to the top of the Capitoline Hill for the much-vaunted spectacular view of Rome, I found the view from the terrace at Genio to be equally, if not more, spectacular....and certainly more private to enjoy!

Breakfast was lovely (I am a cappuccino and brioche person, and both were fresh, hot and plentiful), also served on the terrace.

Proximity to Piazza Navona, bus lines, and the beautiful Via Coronari makes it an excellent location. Street noise did not bother us at all, and I am a light sleeper.

I would definitely stay here again if the price is right (as it was last week!)

The Genio was the answer to our wishes in Rome. A short walk to the Piazza Navona and the bustle of the crowds. The No. 70 bus outside will get you to the Termini train station and both Metro lines. When you are in Rome, it is always good to learn the busses.
The roof is available for the predictably good buffet breakfast. In April it was full of lemon blossoms. The room and the bathroom was clean and pleasant. We enjoyed our stay there.

Highly recommend this hotel for ideal location site. More than 12 top recommended sites all within walking distance. It is a 10 min walk to the Basilica S Pietro and a 40 min walk to the Colosseo and all the other sites are within this range. The hotel staff is friendly, comfortable bed although the rooms are small and good breakfast selection. Several good eating places all around the hotel as well as several restaurants around Piazza Navona which is a 5 min walk. The tour of Basilica is worth the price but pre-book to avoid long line ups. The colosseo and the Castel Sant' Angelo are also worth the entry cost. I would definitely return to Rome and would use the same hotel as it was perfectly placed. The travel from the airport to the hotel is roughly 40 min

Room Tip: the best view is from the top floor where breakfast is served.

We stayed in this hotel twice; in spring and fall. It is really difficult to find a nice hotel in Rome; they are too expensive and you pay for location and not quality so we didn't expect anything. The hotel is just around the corner from the Piazza Navone, so you can go to Spanish stairs, Colosseum as well as Sant'Angelo and Vatican city on foot. Our room was very dark each time but so it is in old buildings and it cannot be helped. But the room was big enough and clean. Buffet-style breakfast is served on rooftop terrace from where there is a panoramic view of the city. Breakfast is good, tables very clean and staff very kind. We stayed during Easter so we were very lucky to have Italian traditional Easter cake -Colomba di Pasqua at breakfast. It was delicious and nice feeling to be treated like an important guest. It was the first time for us to have the cake. It was really good and warm heart of the one who had decided this menu made the cake much more delicious. We bought one in the supermarket the next day and brought it with us to Japan. Later I made it at home. I am happy to know a new speciality and a new tradition. Anyhow this hotel is nothing special but also nothing bad. When the taxi that we had booked at the reception took us to the airport, the taxi driver said as soon as we left the hotel: " the staff of this hotel is really very kind and great." We had the same opinion and if we visit Rome again, we will stay in Genio. There are many restaurants around and the food was good but they cheat and want the tips as soon as possible. Never order if prices are not written. I recommend a small bar at the corner , next to hotel if you want to have a light lunch. It is in the street, not so clean and you must take care of your belonings, but it is good and staff is very friendly.

Room Tip: The hotel is beside a street so ask for a higher floor with less noise.

Decent hotel - rooms not too small - noisy if you're on the street in front. Bathrooms are nice size.
One of the front desk men very unfriendly and not pleasant and/or helpful. He acted like we were bothering him if we had a question to ask. Their breakfast was the usual, however, you can sit outside (weather permitting) and the view is very nice. A stone's throw to the Piazza Navone. Close to most of the sites. Rooms and lobby very dated and could use some remodeling. All in all, it wasn't bad and you don't spend much time there anyway.

Room Tip: The front of the hotel is noisy. I'm sure the rooms across the hall were much quieter.

We are just back from 3 days in the Eternal City and stayed in the Genio for 3 days. The Hotel is ideally located just off Piazzo Navone, which is central to all the wonderful sites, such as the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum. St. Peter's is a 20 stroll over the Ponto Umberto in the other direction. Contrary to other reviews, we found the hotel very quiet and were not disturbed by traffic noise. We slept well in the beds, which were very comfortable and firm, again contrary to some review , we were in the front of the hotel on the fifth floor. Breakfast is very good. There were tea & coffe making facilities in the room, so we did not have to use the travel kettle I bought with me. We were also greeted with a free small bottle of Prosecco and a bag of crisps (chips for the US travellers) which was a nice touch. There was no question of us being fobbed off to another hotel. The Genio is one of the Leonardi chains of hotels in Rome, so it might happen in high season. My advice is to insist, maybe saying that Tickets are being delivered later or friends are coming to meet with you etc. A small white lie to get what you paid for.

Staff were helpful and pleasant throughout our stay. Best of all there is a gem of a Trattoria, reasonably priced just 1 minute walk around the corner. This is called Ristorante Fiammetta. When we went back the second evening we were treated like friends. The house wine was excellent and at €9 a bottle, you couldn't go wrong. My husband was very impressed with the 66 cl bottle of Heiniken for only €6. Booking is advised.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Rome as much as we did. We will return to Rome and the Genio

Room Tip: take a room on the 4th or 5th floor, to ensure reduction of noise from traffic below.

I stayed here for 3 nights in Feb, and was really worried before I came about getting there and being told it's over booked, that thankfully didn't happen. I didn't particularly think much of the hotel and its deffo not a 4*, it's very average & looks like it could do with being re decorated. In our room the bathroom drains were kicking out a right stink, the walls must be quite thin too because there was a child staying next door and he loved to scream and run around, it sounded like he could have been in our room it was that bad, and we also had building work going on outside our window.
The safe worked great the bed was big and comfy and the shower was fab. The breakfast room has great views out over lots of Rome, it was just a bit too cold to sit outside on the terrace. The staff on reception were nice and friendly although we didn't have that many dealings with them so can't comment further.
The location of the hotel is fantastic! It's around 15 mins walk to Vatican, sant angelo, Trevino fountain, spanish steps, pantheon and around 25 mins to colosseum. Just off piazza navona there was plenty of restaurants the ones closer to navona were a little more pricey but we found some nice places to eat and a nice cocktail bar called Animo I think...

The hotel is ok, I would recommend for location, just don't go thinking its a 4*. It's just somewhere to rest your head.
