You can't have everything. There are literally maybe 3 hotels near P. Navona.....if this is where you want to stay ( I do), and have nice quiet quaint cobblestone streets to wander - with Latin remaining inscribed on the windowsills......and with zero traffic, no cars allowed, then Hotel Raphael is a good choice. It used to be full of Roman antiques in the lobby, hopefully still is, making it a very interesting place.

There is a nice small intimate bar and a rooftop bar as well. The hotel is covered with vines, on the street just behind the Piazza Navona, you can't get any closer. Since there are no cars allowed in the area I'm not sure why some of the reviewers would say this isn't a quiet location. The only noise could be from people coming home from restaurants, and an occasional motorcycle a few streets away.

The room I shared with a friend was adequate, not fabulous, but nice. Bathrooms are "let the shower rip" type.....the walls and ceilings are all tile. It's Italy, this is quite common and shouldn't be regarded as a "bad bathroom". I think it's expensive for what you get, but it's nice, and you are in the best area in Rome as far as getting around to anything you'd want to see. I prefer the Hotel Portoguese Roma but this would be second choice, and is MORE expensive than the latter. Both have English speaking staffs, Raphael is a bit stuffier feeling than the more casual Portoguese Roma nearby.

My friend and I had a double room, it had an armoire with plenty of space, 2 double beds, plenty of space to get around the beds, not as upscale as the price would indicate but staying in this location more than makes up for that. Did I mention that before?:-)

I can't imagine staying in any other location in Rome. I can't remember the other hotel close by but when I do I'll review it.

Room Tip: Ask them to see a few, we did not but had no problems.

We stayed at the hotel Raphael last week during a four-day visit in Rome. We were amazed by the huge hordes of tourists that were in Rome. Despite the crowds and noise in the city, The Hotel Raphael provided a quiet retreat, in a stylish setting with a great staff. We found out that the annual "Taste of Rome" was being held and the hotel staff assisted in getting us tickets, on short notice. Great hotel, in a fantastic location.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hotel Raphael. It is a lovely hotel located in a great location. You can walk almost anywhere from the hotel. We were upgraded to a nice suite on the first floor. Another reviewer complained about the noise but we did not hear any noise and we were on the front of the hotel. Maybe we were so tired after touring Rome each day that we were in a dead sleep. The room was very nice and had a large bathroom with everything you could want. The breakfast was very good and the breakfast staff very nice and accomodating. We also ate dinner on the rooftop on our last night and it was excellent and the staff was very nice and helpful. My only disappointment was with the concierge. The hotel really does not have a set concierge but the front desk staff acts as the concierge. If I had one criticism of the hotel it would be the concierge staff. The girls were fairly good but Domenico was rude to me and then to my husband. His talents would probably be better utilized in a budget motel chain.
However, I would stay here again. The good far outweighs one rude person.

In reading some other reviews saying the hotel is noisy, I just can't say that about our room. We stayed in a Richard Meier room and it was completely noise-free from inside and outside the hotel. The staff is incredibly friendly and speaks perfect English. Also staying next to Piazza Navona is hard to beat. This is my 4th night at the hotel out of a total of 5 and it's great.

We had two couples and two rooms and everyone loved it. In a city where service levels are generally well below the U.S. in every category, Hotel Raphael stands out. The next time we come back to Rome we will stay here again no doubt.

Room Tip: we loved the Richard Meier

This smaller hotel is just off Piazza Navona in Rome. The neighborhood is easy to walk around and filled with some fabulous restaurants and shops. You can walk to St. Peter's (20 min), the Pantheon (10 min), the Trevi Fountain (20 min) and the Spanish Steps (25 min), The website for the hotel is http://www.raphaelhotel.com. They have several different room types available from petite to suite. The rooms are also either modern in style or a more classic and antique style with comfortable beds and well appointed bathrooms. They have a great little restaurant on the first floor and when the weather is comfortable, a rooftop dining area is an incredible option. The neighborhood is a walker's delight and an easy place to drop in and get a bite to eat or go to the grocery and pick up neat food items to take home. The area is also awash in a great variety of churches to peek into and see some fabulous art and architecture. We focused on the works of G. Bernini and traveled all around Rome to see his works with an easy one right in the middle of Piazza Navona. We traveled in late fall and found things far less crowded than the summer months. Wear comfy walking shoes and bring more than one pair in case of rain. Pack light with neutral colors and you can go into most places without feeling under dressed. Just as a hint, if you've seen "Eat, Pray, Love" you will see the ivy colored wall of the front of the hotel in the background of the outside dining scene in Rome.

Booked two Classic Rooms for two nights. The location is really the big selling point for the Hotel and within walking distance of pretty much all the main sights and especially handy for the pedestrianised Piazza Navona which has a unique buzz about it.
All four of us staying agreed it does not come up to the five star level it surprisingly has. Our attempts to get a good nights sleep were disturbed by a cocophony of sounds including various hotel plumbing rumblings, cars and people outside at all hours, and comings and goings of other guests. The sound proofing between rooms is poor. Our particular rooms on the first floor - were amongst the smallest I have ever stayed in. The roof top terrace is a fabulous haven to relax in. Downstairs public rooms - with a range of works of art and antique furniture is impressive. The check in / out, service, and breakfast buffet all do the job. The bedroom corridors and stairs carpet & walls need a refurbishment. (At least vacuum the stairs carpet it was filthy all weekend we were there).

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room on a high floor. Avoid 1st floor.

We are enchanted by our stay in this Relais et Chateaux Hotel. We booked our rooms in the floors designed by Richard Meier which are decorated with a modern, warm and welcoming style. Its location is at the heart of the city in one of the charming cobblestone streets surrounding Piazza Navona. It is walking distance from most main attractions. You feel so peaceful inside the hotel and the minute you step outside you find yourself in the middle of the action with a huge choice of restaurants around. The buffet breakfast is rich and tasty. We definitely recommend it!
