This is a nice hotel, in a good location within Rome. The rooms and hotel are clearly built in a different generation, which has pluses and minuses. On the positive side, the rooms are big. The negative is that some rooms (ours) was internal facing. The restaurant was overpriced and the concierge was generally unhelpful.

This is my "goto" hotel when I am in Roma and I stay 2-3 times per year. It is perfectly located a 5 minute walk north of the top of the Spanish Steps. It is also just south of the gorgeous Borghese Gardens and the Borghese museum (a must see!). Across the street is Cafe De Paris....for delicious cappucino's and people watching and up the block is the Famous Harry's Bar....Really prime location.

The hotel itself is a lovely old palace. It is one of the largest hotels in Central Rome so sometimes the check in is quite busy. On the other hand, when you arrive early, I find They often have a room ready as they have many rooms as compared with a smaller hotel who have few to choose from.

The rooms were done in Italian style with sumptuous silks on the walls and crystal chandeliers hanging above the beds, Beautiful. We had Grande Deluxe rooms which were Very large by Rome standards (500+square feet) and had excellent comfy beds and were nice and clean and quiet. After a busy day we shut the door to our beautiful room and went Ahhhhh. Internet speeds were good and I was able to connect up to three devices with only one charge. This hotel being not "hotel built" originally does have some small courtyard facing basic rooms...I would pay the extra and try to get one of the deluxe rooms....The difference is worth it.

I am a Starwood member and My benefits were provided, free breakfast etc. The breakfast was delicious with Hams, Eggs and fresh ricotta cheese and goat cheese and cakes....oooh the cakes. The breakfast was tough to ignore.

Front desk staff, Bar staff and housekeeping staff were all friendly and efficient. The concierges were always there to help. If I have one small complaint, it is that they recommend more $$ restaurants then I am used to.....That said, they have many different people who I am sure want different things so they probably recommend "safe" places with little risk of it being not good.

Overall, this is favourite hotel in Rome. Also as it is in a more high end residential area, there are several restaurants behind the hotel in walking distance that are quite good. The combination of all these things keeps us coming back again and again. Safe travels!

Room Tip: Avoid courtyard facing rooms....They are the cheapest and it is worth it to pay a little extra and g...

This is a grand La Dolce Vita hotel with the benefit of modern amenities, most notably the Westin Heavenly Bed. Our large room---red damask, gilt, crystal chandelier, even upholstered closet interiors- was absolutely quiet and had frosty cold air-conditioning (unusual in Europe). The bathroom was very large and well appointed: double sinks, bathtub, separate shower and bidet. Staff was courteous and helpful. The Via Veneto is a convenient location and a leafy, relatively calm respite from the craziness of Rome.

WOW! This is a gorgeous hotel in Rome within walking of the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and more. Terrific service, cool bar and our room was extraordinary. We asked for and received an upgrade into a suite and were enchanted by the spaciousness, corner views and wonderful touches that Westin offers. Highly recommend! We'd love to return.

My husband and I stayed at the Westin Excelsior last year and very happily returned for another visit. We arrived around 9:00 am thinking that it would be unlikely to be given a room so many hours before the official check-in time. We were prepared to check our luggage and return later in the day. The staff at the front desk greeted us very warmly and graciously assigned us a room. I realize that not every guest can expect such exceptional treatment, especially if the hotel occupancy is high. We were extremely grateful for the favor, especially since we were groggy after our transatlantic flight.

What we love most about the Westin is the warm, attentive service. We're not big shots or particularly big tippers so we were surprised when Tiziana in the dining room and Matilda at the front desk remembered us even though a year had passed since they had met us. They and all their colleagues throughout the hotel greeted us warmly and gave us excellent service.

We also love the quality and variety of food in the dining room. The excellent breakfast buffet got us off to a good start in the morning, and the delicious dinner was the perfect way to end the day.

Our room was a bit dated, but it was comfortable, especially the heavenly bed.

The Westin Excelsior is conveniently located in an elegant section of Rome.

Full disclosure - The Westin was a very good value for us because we received a Starwood employee discount, but we do not stand to gain personally from this review. We are not receiving any compensation for it. We are not Westin employees, nor are our friends or family. Well, maybe we shouldn't say that. Even though we never met the Westin staff before our visit last year and didn't communicate with them between last year and this year, they treated us like part of their family. We like them so much that we would stop by to say hello to them even if we didn't manage to get a room at the Westin during our next trip to Rome.

We were at the Westin for 4 nights for a conference. The room was wonderful. The decor was nice. The food for both the breakfasts, and in the restaurants were fantastic. The gala dinner held in the ballroom, was nicer than most weddings I have ever been to. The only complaint. On the third night (Thursday) VERY VERY loud music. played from 2-4 a.m. Our room faced the back side of the hotel. I do not know if this came from a private residence or a club. But it was not helpful for a good nights rests. The concierge was great, and had great recommendations for food including the Tulli restaurant located near the Tritan fountain.

Room Tip: Don't get a room on the back side of the hotel on a Thursday night!

I have stayed at many Starwood properties around the US and Europe and this is one of the more disappointing. I was quite excited for my stay at a grand hotel in Rome. But, this Westin is a bit tired. The lobby is large but the décor needs updating (some of the chairs are stained and the place looks run down). The rooms are small-ish with outmoded décor and very standard furnishings. The whole place feels like a small step up from a Sheraton. They seem to rely on the location (on Via Veneto) to sell the property. Definitely not a 5 star.

Staff is also just lackluster. They are a bit cold and housekeeping is not very good. The room was missing the basics - hair dryer, iron.

For the money, suggest staying elsewhere unless you need the SPG points. Even then, there are better Starwood properties in Rome.

Room Tip: Do not choose a room facing the courtyard - these rooms get very little sun and feel gloomy.
