“Wonderful Stay in Rome”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Just returned from an excellent trip to Rome and Umbria. Stayed the first three days at Hotel Lancelot in Rome just down the street from the Colloseum. The hotel is clean and and very convenient to all the great sites. The Khan family is friendly and accommodating. On our last day we had an early flight and they opened the breakfast half an hour early for us. The rooms are on the small side like all European hotels, but have lots of hot water and fluffy towels.

The made dinner reservations for us even though they have their own restaurant on premise. It is a prix fixe dinner ($25); the selections during our stay were appealing though we never ate there.

They have a friendly and cozy bar at the back of the hotel and a nice outdoor patio when the weather is good. We were able to have a nice drink and exchanges ideas with other people staying in the hotel. Would definitely return.

The Lancelot is a lovely and friendly hotel in a great location, just 5 minutes walk from the Colosseum and Forum. As a family of 5 we had a room that accommodated us all ( double bed and three singles) and was large by European standards. It also had a wrap around balcony which added to the room and we enjoyed sitting outside watching Roma.

The location really was fantastic, lots of food options close by including pizza, pasta and gelato. Public transport was a short walk away as well. The owner and staff at the Lancelot were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was European but plentiful with choice for everyone.

Stayed at the Lancelot the second week of October. Well priced hotel with comfortable, very clean rooms. Lovely, breakfast with a variety of offerings. Outstanding staff! They were welcoming and fun. Their excellent English more than made up for our sketchy Italian. Let them make you a local specialty drink (or, of course, a fabulous glass of wine) in the quiet, intimate bar. Went out of their way to help us find a wonderful guide for the Colosseum/Forum and try to reach our airline about a lost item. Above and beyond!!! Great location, with several good restaurants nearby.

I stayed at the Lancelot for 6 nights from the end of September. My single room with balcony and shower room was very comfortable. It overlooked the central courtyard of the hotel and formed part of the larger nighbourhood of apartments which faced onto the surrounding streets - felt like I was a resident of Rome with this outlook and especially enjoyed watching and hearing life go on around me!
The staff were very helpful and accommodating and arranged for the use of a wheelchair for one of my friends for the duration of their stay plus referring me to a local dentist after I chipped a tooth one morning. They helped with buses, taxis and advice about places to visit. Its location is very convenient with plenty of reasonably priced restaurants in the neighbourhood.
The large number of Americans guests was somewhat overwhelming to a non American and did put us off the communal dining experience - but then we met up with a delightful family on the one night we did dine in. I would be happy to return to this hotel.

The owner and staff were outstanding! Very helpful and polite. Rooms were neat and clean. Very close to all attractions. Handled an emergency immediately and efficiently. Could have stayed another week. Price very good for the location. Got the exact type of room requested. The owner gave suggestions about special places to visit.

Room Tip: Call ahead and request a room with a balcony, then follow up to confirm. Corner balcony give best v...

Returned today after 4nts in Rome, to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary, staying at the Hotel Lancelot in Via Capo d'Africa. We booked through Agoda and got a very good rate for our stay. Before we even got there the hotel staff were great. I emailed and asked for advice about taxis from Fiumicino Airport. They confirmed it should be 48 euros but if we gave them 7 days notice they would book us a taxi for 50 euros (1euro for each case extra). We were met by Giovanni who drove us straight to the hotel - so there were no worries about being fiddled and it took the stress out of finding taxi stands etc which was worth the 2 extra euros.

We received a very warm welcome, we're checked in and taken to our 5th floor room - room 52 - which if you looked out of the window to the left you had a fantastic view of the colosseum and straight ahead was a view of the Domus Aurea. We'd only been in our room for about 10 minutes when there was a knock at the door and the gentleman who had shown us to our room was standing there with a bottle of cava with a card congratulating us on our wedding anniversary! What a great start to our holiday.

The room was a good size and was very clean with a small en suite shower room. The was a free safe in the room too, air conditioning and a TV with limited channels but then you're not there to watch tv are you but it is nice to keep up with the news if you like to. The breakfast room was lovely. The breakfasts were really nice - though somewhat repetitive - the only thing that seemed to change each day was the cheese but it was very nice despite this. I like fruit tea and just had to ask for a pot of hot water which was happily provided. Oh, we took our own travel kettle because they aren't provide in the rooms so if you like a cup of tea like we do you'd be advised to take one. Maybe that's standard for Rome hotels? I don't know as it was my first visit. That aside We couldn't fault anything about the hotel and would recommend it to anyone- even families because they do family rooms.

It is literally a 5 minute walk to the colosseum but if you turn right out of the gate to the top of the street then left about 2 minutes away is San Clemente which is definitely worth a visit to the remains underneath that go down 2 levels into a 1st century roman house - with it's own spring! It's so hard to imagine that most of Rome is built on top of earlier Rome! From there if you walk away from the colosseum up Via San Giovanni in Laterno you come to San Giovanni Laterno which is the second most important church in Rome after St. Peter's. It's breathtaking. As are all of the other churches in Rome. Huge and so richly decorated - and free to visit in the main.

The best place to visit for food is the Trastevere area best reached over the Ponte Sisto or Ponte Garibaldi. The italians eat starters, 1st main course, 2nd main course, desert, then coffee. But you don't have to eat all of that if you don't want to. You can get specials or just order a 1st or 2 nd. You can get pizzas for between 2 and 6 euros depending on the toppings!! It's not true that Rome is expensive just keep away from the popular tourist areas where they will literally see you coming and wander into the back streets where you find authentic Italian restaurants frequented by the locals. Most of our meals cost us less than 40 euros and that included a bottle of wine - 9 euros being the most expensive we paid!

Beware of the unofficial street sellers - if you've been to Paris you'll know what to expect - and watch out for pickpockets. I wore my bag across my body and under my coat after I was warned about someone who thinking wearing a bag across the body was safest had it cut by a passing motorcyclist who then rode off with it!

Rome is a beautiful city and if you haven't been before you're in for a treat. Enjoy!

We took a taxi from the Termini to this hotel. It was about 15 minutes and cost 16 euro. The hotel is only 3 blocks from the Colosseum and the Palatine ruins. You will need to be on the top floor to see the Colosseum from your room. The room/bath was very clean. Yes they are small, but you don't go to Rome to spend a lot of time in your hotel room. The bed is just a mattress on a frame (no box springs), so it is soft. The breakfast selection was nice. The breakfast area is fairly small with a few round tables that seat about six to eight people each. The idea is to socialize with other guests. There is also a bar area where the front desk person will serve you drinks if you wish. Everyone was very helpful with directions and suggestions. The hotel also offers an evening meal (25 euro with reservation). There are a few restaurants/bars nearby. Also, there is a great gelato place just two blocks away. There is a gated courtyard between the street and hotel entrance. Stay away from the city buses--pickpockets. To get around Rome, the hotel will call a taxi for you. It will arrive is 5 minutes or less and is much safer.
