We had a skip the line ticket which is worth it because the line was sooooo long for everyone else. We only waited about 10 minutes and were in. I had a Rick Steve's audio walking tour downloaded to my phone which helped to understand all that we were seeing. If you don't do that, it is worth getting a group guide. They are outside trying to sign people up so if you don't do it in advance, you can still get in and hear more interesting things about the history and area.

The Colosseum is a must see when in Rome. Great architecture from 2000 years ago and very evocative. However. Is very crowded and the flow of the visit is less than ideal.

Amazing place to visit, but definitely pre book and do try and visit first thing in the morning. If you’re there as it opens, you get to see it far less crowded and it’s easier to take photos. We had one of the video tours. It’s on an IPOD, so take your own earphones if you have them. They do issue ear phones, but they quality was poor. Mine didn’t work at all, so I have to navigate the queue again to get them replaced. Enjoyed our visit, but very glad to have been there before the peak of the tour groups visiting.
