We visited Rome recently, and the Coliseum was the first attraction we visited. We had bought the ticket from the website www.coopculture.it, and had to stand in line only for 15 minutes or so for security check. Otherwise the lines were very long. Inside it was amazing, to see the size of the place and read the stories. Don't miss it, but please remember to buy the tickets in advance. And no need to print the vouchers out, they will accept it on your smartphone. And the same ticket is also valid for 2 days, and used for other nearby attractions like the Palatine hill, Roman Forum etc. - so do not throw them away.

This was everything I had imagined it would be - and more.
We bought our tickets online before we left the UK and this meant we could "skip-the-line". So basically we went straight through to the security check point rather than waiting in a queue for over and hour.
We opted to have the audio guide which was really helpful and informative - you could chose where to explore and go round the Colosseum in your own time and the audio guide was easy to use.
Nothing could quite prepare you for stepping out into the main auditorium of this vast arena - you could almost hear the cheer of the crowds and the roars of the Gladiators.
We spent a good couple of hours exploring, but you can spend a much or a little time here are you wish. The views out from the Colosseum are also as beautiful and breathtaking as the views inside.

Great place. We all loved it. Go on a guided tour to make the most of it. It only costs 5 euros per adult (free for children) if you buy it from the Colosseum itself. Made queueing system and a bit of a free for all. If you want a guided tour you can skip round the queue and got straight to the end windows in the ticket office. You could also go to the Forum first as this saves you queueing as 1 ticket gets you into both. Make sure you take water as there are lots of stairs.
